I'll bring it back
@op true never thought abt this
I rlly wish instrumental hooks did come back...
Facts. In some cases I feel like it would expose the wackness of their performance vs how hard the beat is. Good idea though. About to run off w this s***
Theory: a reason is old songs were built upon samples, and those are obviously good enough songs on their own.
The attention span of today's rap listener is equivalent to a mentally challenged goldfish so if your hook doesn't consist of repeating the same three or four words or adlibs you already lost them and they are on to the next track.
Grew up listening to my dad play old school hip hop radio all the time. I always loved the songs that would come on, but the one thing I hated was I noticed that on almost every song, the hook was either just the sample playing without any vocals, or the title of the song repeated 4 times while the beat played.
Absolutely hate this trend and I’m glad it’s not as common anymore

Yeah its weird to think of why. I mean production should be better now but I guess that means more tinkering with the voice and more reasons to not let a beat ride anymore. But I genuinely believe if done correctly its just as, if not more effective than a great singing hook.
this is a good thread
i miss this, it's nice to let the instrumental ride sometimes. it can really emphasize the verses

Fair. But a little bit now and then wouldn't hurt lol
I don't understand if this is what you're talking about but this song comes to mind
Hiphop songs don’t have hooky vocal samples anymore. And now that the industry can just get sample packs from cubeatz/Frank dukes etc why would they go through the trouble of clearing samples?
Sucks but that’s it

!https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=m3kVgCXFXdgYeah Drake is one of the last ones that do this. But he's one of the few ones that has a good enough voice to not do it lol Cole used to do it a lot a the beginning of his career. Sideline Story album is full of these type of songs.

this probably it tbh
The instrumental hook was for songs that the rappers couldn't find a good hook to probably

Na those are some timeless ass songs in OP lol now that someone mentioned, Drake used this technique on Nice For What, kinda. but he still has singing hook/bridge to it. But that's as close as it gets these days
Good thread, OP.
Scarface's "I Seen A Man Die" is another example of letting the beat ride during the hook. Classic song.

S*** we could have a thread full of classic songs like this. NWA, Eazy E and all of the West Coast cats loved that s*** during the late 80s/early 90s. And the South still held it down until its last days in the early 2000s with the chopped and screwed style hooks.
