kendrick strategically did this so he could become a household name superstar while making strictly conscious rap early in his career

it was a great plan and it worked beautifully

a lot of rappers ruin their albums by trying to force pop collabs and joints that are aimed at other audiences because it doesn’t fit the album. i wish more rappers actually adopted this strategy, it leads to more creative freedom.
