TDKR was hilarious but I don't think that's what Nolan was going for.

apparently WB approached Nolan after the TDK premiere and suggested DiCaprio as Riddler in a third movie, but he just decided to go with Leo for the lead of his next movie

yeah this was in a big article I read way back regarding WB's suggestions following TDK's success - apparently they were also trying to put Nolan on Eddie Murphy as a villain (Eddie just had Oscar attention for Dreamgirls, and was looking for more serious roles for a while) and they thought that 'Gotham' would be a good title for a third film (which they ended up using for that show after Nolan turned it down)

Sony really did Raimi so dirty around that time, first forcing Venom into Spidey 3, then locking Spidey 4-6 with James Vanderbilt finishing a draft of 4 (and treatments for 5 and 6), cast getting prepped and everything, only to pull the plug on 4 like 8 weeks before they were meant to shoot

10 yo me was devastated i remember following the news of spiderman 4 every day just to wake up one day and see that 'SPIDERMAN 4 cancelled
