because too many people copied him so he deliberately changed his style

S/T and Die Lit era spawned the dreads/Supreme/Jordan 1/Pierre Bourne type beat wave that a lot of people ran with

then he disappeared for years and reinvented himself with WLR, which created the rage beat wave, Yeat, Ken Carson, Destroy Lonely, etc

he disappeared again, changed his beats, flow, bars, etc and came back with what he’s doing now

Rocky tried riding the S/T Die Lit wave after Yams died and Carti realized it and cut him off

Carti addressed this in his 2019 Fader article:

These days, Carti says, he talks to the same three or four people every day; other than that, he’s fine spending time by himself. yeah i was just thinking to myself the other day about how much the synths mimic an electric guitar in a sense, however i didn’t connect the 808s with power chords, that’s actually a really apt comparison

i wonder how much of this music will be looked back upon fondly after Carti has his run and the wave kinda dies down, you mentioning how much some of that grunge music sounds like a product of its era reminds me of the criticism i hear about Pablo Honey or The Bends
