This may be an unpopular opinion but I think Ye performance was a lil sloppy
It was entertaining but his verses and the hook just didn’t have the same polish as singles he put out in his prime
i’d love to see a documentary just on the creation of this song
you could do an insane doc on the three songs kanye made with paul mccartney lol
I played this song a ton i fw it but i feel like 1 it was decently popular and 2 him saying nigga literally 100 times on the song didnt help the mass appeal

You’re in luck
Around this time he started making weird decisions like not dropping the iTunes or streaming or whatever link immediately and not doing videos for songs like this or Cold
5 minute length and that dope Paul McCartney outro didn’t resonate with the Big Bang theory/Rae Sremmurd types of 2015
Idk but it’s one of my favorite rap singles, just based off the structure alone
Love how well all the different textures came together. Without those elements it’s a standard trap song which isn’t a bad thing. Just think it’s cool to hear other genres/styles seamlessly implemented into a rap record
A lot of times niggas try too hard when they explore musical styles. Ye does a great job of experimenting without letting the left field aspects of his style overshadow the rap sound
Bruh had Paul McCartney, Allan Kingdom, and Theophilus London on that track. The main part of the beat sounds like it could’ve been for Future. You really don’t hear songs like that on the regular
You’re in luck
i remember this but i’m talking about a 90 minute film with real interviews breaking down the process and the context those songs had personally and culturally
Despite everything this is it. I think this was the moment that Ye stopped the experimental/progressive wave he started in 2008 and became obsessed with wanting to be back on the radio after this didn’t work
He was already on that wave this was after 45 seconds and I’m pretty sure he had already made the born in the USA comment
Only One, 45 seconds and this was his experimental attempt at making more mainstream stuff for the time and it just didn’t really stick.
This was basically a failed attempt for him to assimilate with the new trap rap sound that had taken over
45 seconds is kind of obvious
Only One is more subtle and you might say “well how is that mainstream” but I think he felt like a lot of mothers out there would appreciate the song and it could be a universal ballad (it’s my mom’s favorite kanye song since she heard it on the radio the week it dropped)
Around this time he started making weird decisions like not dropping the iTunes or streaming or whatever link immediately and not doing videos for songs like this or Cold
Cold did actually have a music video, but it kinda goes with your point about weird decisions

!https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ub9MMPAyN3kLmaoo I forgot about this
Yeah why did he do this like he couldn’t afford a separate video lmao. Or even just a run and gun handheld cam viral type video which at the time would have been huge for someone like Ye to do
Didn’t Hype Williams do this video too? Odd all around cuz this around the time Hype Williams videos stopped being Hype Williams videos lol
