Over the last few years I realized a lot of rappers noticeably in the south convert to Santeria or religions that society would deem as witchcraft? (I’m not saying it is and honestly would like to learn about it out of curiosity). I know the Muslim movement is a thing as well but I understand that because of the prevalence in the prison system and low income areas. (I’m cool with a couple 5%ers iykyk) and when we talk about it I realize that’s usually the origin.

But why Santeria in the south usually once they start hanging in Miami? Stunna4, Savage, Kodak, and others. I was watching a stunna TikTok and noticed his bracelets a lot of southern rappers wear Santeria bracelets.

    Are they actually converting?

they adopt the practices and aesthetic but I would hardly call most of them full on practitioners or say they converted

21 comes from a caribbean / Dominica background iirc so he probably grew up around Ifa and didn’t convert after his success

Kodak identifies as a Hebrew Israelite

the only rapper i can think of that’s an outright practioner of Santeria (Palo Mayombe) is Wifisfuneral

Atlanta has a HEAVYYYY Ifa following in the hood. Our practicioner (RIP) back home was a haitan babalawo.

I think it's great lol. Finally let's uplift the actual African religions that WE do instead of the white mans

a lot of them be doing it for the aesthetics though frfr.

Spirituality itself has become a popular thing to jump on to. Hence the evil eye and the surface level horoscope talk. But ask them to name a deity outside of ogun or yemaya and it's like crickets lol.

I have no problem if it's genuine and people are trying to actually learn but a lot of people do be highkey putting african religious culture as a costume and idk, that s*** don't sit well with my ori.

Santeria, Vodoun, etc. are all just offsets of Ifa with their own twist to it from a historical sense.

Africans in the spanish slave trade that still wanted to practice their religion while also not getting their asses brutalized adopted the christian imagery while still practicing created santeria.

As a current Israelite (was converted young, I’m starting to see a lot of things I don’t agree with.) I’m starting to actually open up to it, I remember times after Kodak saying that and he wore those bracelets and due to his tats in our community he’s viewed as worldly. They call them “Abominations” I know it’s f***ed up but yea

I partially feel like it's just an aesthetic. Regardless it's better than Christianity imo.

I stay in a somewhat sanctuary city that’s really diverse when it comes to Caribbean people lately. I was friends with a rican and French Haitian girl. Her and her gf were explaining how here a lot of people dk there’s a prevalent community. So when I ask women at work that I chop it with, they get suspicious. She wanted to show me some stuff and revealed how she also practice but keep it a secret. We fell out tho
