based on that lil yachty thread that was on here a few weeks ago, i decided to look at the waterfall method, especially since ive done it myself a bunch as an artist. i got some numbers in here!!!
do you think artists will keep doing it?
I dont really enjoy it as much so it doesn't matter to me why they do it
I'm sure for some business reason it makes sense but that doesn't matter
For Yachty I think it's a good idea
He randomly dropped a J Cole feature out of nowhere, no promo or nothing and it's not even on an album
it's like the new "throw s*** at the wall until something sticks" method that used to happen with singles when artists couldnt get official release dates
If you create very fast I think it works as a model
Otherwise you have to stock up for awhile and might as well drop an album at that point

definitely. unfortunately in today's attention economy pretty much everyone is forced to throw stuff at the wall unless they are absolutely tippy top A list

well if you just keep dropping singles and waterfalling, eventually you can just finish the project and call it an album haha. ive done that and i talk about doing that in the video

it could be on an album in the future tho

I can't imagine this being a super satisfying album experience for fans
Like if you already heard everything before the album came out
Maybe that doesn't matter to kids anymore now though they probably just need like their weekly reminder that the artist exists or they'll move on
It's not how I would like to present my work as an artist though probably

I def get this too. unfortunately if you're still in the lane of trying to gain fans vs trying to satisfy the ones that are already there, then an approach like this makes more sense. if i look at the streams on my songs released as singles on my album vs non singles its a pretty big difference, even though i think one of the songs on the album is actually the strongest

as a fellow artist, its one of the dumbest things labels are doing with artists
it stagnates hype a whole lot

how do u feel like it stagnates hype? im curious forreal, not tryna say it doesnt

perfect example is the yachty waterfall you used
when Strike was first released as a single, it had two songs from his last album "Lets Start Here"
i thought that was clever because the black seminole was gaining major traction
but now we're four singles in and each is attached to the previous released tracks as an EP
unsuspecting fans are expecting new music and old fans are getting annoyed with rereleases of the same song
not to mention, that s*** f***s up my music library lmao

yeaaa i mentioned f***ing up the library later in the video, i know that s*** is so annoying lmao
i think eventually we're all just gonna expect the waterfall so fans wont get as annoyed. but i also hope DSPs get smarter and start linking the versions. apple music is the worst at this

yeah truth be told i probably wouldn't care as much if the library didnt update every time lmao

Can you explain what waterfall is please

so basically imagine i drop Single A last month. when I drop Single B this month, I add Single A as track 2 to that song's release. and I keep adding for each single until the whole album drops

Cheers, yeah seems like a good tactic tbh. It definitely gets me to listen to their other songs

yea do you ever find it annoying? i feel like the benefit of getting those extra listens probably outweighs the smaller portion of people who find it annoying as f*** (although maybe rightfully so haha)
