local places
Word. I just took my car to a franchise shop and they tried to get me to pay $400+ to replace my brake calipers when I know damn well them s***s weren't making my wheel lock up. I lifted the car up, removed the wheels, and checked myself...saw my brakes were good.
Took it to small shop and they said it was a transmission issue and only charged $25 for the diagnostic.

similar s*** happened once, went to a semi big mechanic place in town. they popped open my hood and said my engine was cracked and thats why it was leaking and they would get around to it in a week "maybe". My moms friend looked at it and said I was just missing a car piece that was letting my oil leak and It was nothing to fix
as im stupid as my name suggests, i love old ass bmws, i found a mechanic in my area through a bmw facebook group. he used to work at bmw so he got all the real software and knowledge so he dont f*** me over but god did i get f***ed over the first couple years i started this stupid hobby
damb sorry that happened to you.
i’ve always liked the look of the altimas / maximas but stayed away cause of their reliability. hopefully people can get reimbursed in som way
Job security. Go for an oil change and they tamper with stuff or lie so u have to come back and pay for more s***
If I get an oil change and my car starts acting up I am never going back to the place I got my oil change from tbh

I think some of these places have low skilled mechanics and just guess what the problem could be, then suggest what could possibly fix it. Then suggest another fix if that doesn't solve the problem. Never a thorough diagnostic. A lot of places don't even take your car out for a drive to so see what kind of noise it's making if you tell them you're hearing some s***, lol.
I usually diagnose the problem on my own, watch YouTube videos or find other tutorials online, join online forums etc
& if I see a mechanic has to be involved I read online for reviews
Then I order the parts needed
Then I go to the mechanic tell him fix exactly abc, these are the parts, and then they know better to try to finesse me
I remember I went to go get my brakes changed (I bought them ahead of time) and the guy was like “oh your car has a special e brake that needs to be coded off. It’s gonna cost at least $100 extra.”
I was like what the hell are you talking about man? Went into my cars infotainment system, went to settings, maintenance mode, and set my brakes to maintenance mode which releases the e brake while the car is off
Stupid ass just looked at me like “oh ok nvm.”

One misconception I think is that mechanics are always tryna f***ed up ur car to have u come back. That does happened but it's not really as common w reputable places. Cause that's just bad business. But as always u should know what ur looking to get done and have second opinions on everything
There is literally no way to make money in the auto repair industry without scamming people and absurdly marking things up
