people over 30-35 were raised in a different world. Cable news was literally where many of them were told what the world was like. It was the only place to go besides print media. Us lucky youngsters raised as the Internet was ascendant understand clearly it’s an intellectual wasteland of badly crafted propaganda, but they are still programmed to be attached to it

True, many of the echo chambers on the internet are even worse, more dangerous versions of Fox/CNN. 4chan comes to mind.

I’d say it’s clearly better simply by virtue of not being literally one or two sources you turn on the TV to imbibe passively. Sure there are scores of bullshit narratives, including the same garbage from cable news, and ppl can and mostly do easily fall into echo chambers, but at least you have the opportunity to compare and contrast conflicting options and possibly stumble on some genuine samizdat. If the Internet wasn’t a potential source of dangerously unauthorized information, they wouldn’t be pushing so hard to enclose and censore it.
Simply the fact we are communicating basically instantly with each other right now and could put each other on game the CNN/FOX flacks wouldn’t admit if you pulled their toenails out is something the boomers back when they were in their 20s couldnt even conceive was possible.
But yes, I agree it’s not a panacea and certainly can be used to disseminate info in a way that short-circuits people’s critical thinking skills (often through confirmation bias).
