    Society has become anti intellectual

People used to like thinking about lyrics and interpreting art

Now they just want that quick dopamine

    Ehh I mean, I guess

But at the end of the day music is subjective and the people are saying they don’t care that much for conscious rap

It’s boring to listen to a million rappers talk about the same violent street s*** but it’s also boring to listen to the same few rappers wax poetic on mental health and growth. I’ll give at least MY reasons that doesn’t appeal to me:

    1. My ex was/is a huge fan of that conscious type of music and ofc bumping it is like reminding me of her more or less

    2. It’s genuinely JUST boring. Like I don’t bump a lot of r&b like that unless it’s The Weeknd or early drake or something and both of those feel like they can be interchanged stylistically and themes wise with a lot of modern non conscious rap. Mellowness and a huge focus on conscious health related lyrics and themes just actually bores me in a way whereas violent provocative music feels more fun. I feel like it’s almost just like a masculine dopamine thing. Guys might like stuff that helps them live out masculine power fantasies like an Arnold Schwarzenegger or Tom Cruise movie. Women and gay men typically don’t care as much. Also who knows, maybe guys naturally closer to that ideal also prefer more healthy themes? And I’ve always liked Kendrick and never hated on his music. I’m just not as big a fan of the people he’s probably influenced like Mavi, Mike, Slums etc. I’ve enjoyed Ka and Billy Woods before but their music is dry to me and listening to some more ignorant rap typically appeals. With my final point in this dissertation, violent rap isn’t necessarily the last frontier: there is pill popping and depression rap if one feels compelled. Imo, some of my fav rap to unwind and mellow out too. Why? Super chill vibes on these types of tracks with more of an emphasis on the less thriving aspects of mental illness/health. Being told to thrive a million times doesn’t mean anything necessarily, if you enjoy doing d**** or being unhealthy more. Or if you like the simpler sometimes nerdier but more swaggy oriented style of that type of rap. Again, a power fantasy but more rooted in a lot of peoples actual realities with bad coping mechanisms and all that. If we wanna be honest, it feels less forced positivity and more genuinely relatable for terminally online people over like SZA. I’m talking like Yung Lean or 6 dogs as preferred to artists like Mavi or possibly even Earl.

    3. I do like some to some extent. Earl, Billy Woods, Action Bronson, Ka, Nas. It’s just not THAT exciting still. The reasons could be obvious. Those who grew up on a faster more instant gratification type of rap prefer that to super lyrical miracle type of observations. Some of us aren’t even good at following what those niggas say so we end up having to find video a***ysis to help us understand. It’s good just dry. That’s it.

Early Makonnen was a fun loving pill popping rapper who was far from gangster and had great production on his songs in spite of mid bars/lyrics

One of the highlights of how infectious and conducive to a good mood/good time some of these beats can be. There are some people who will eternally prefer throwing on a Saba song but Saba is like yawn for me because he just spittin about some s*** I feel like I’ve heard before over some boring instrumental. I really think stuff like Saba would have appealed to me more as a youngin when I wanted to relax at my aunts place with some pillows everywhere. Being my own man, I need the energy of something that feels more unique and creative not overly meditative and like I have to sit under a tree with my eyes closed to process it. F*** all that journey of growth type s*** whatever that might be, we blastin this turn up molly poppin music. Lord just listen to that beat.

I guess my reply to this is why is this ham-fisted and not graceful but not the constant name dropping of young teenagers “rolled up in a spliff?”

What you think of Gucci’s song about disrespecting the dead?

I thought it was self reflective and pretty mature of him to even admit he played a part in that.

missed the anniversary of this comment

But probably because of expectations. Noone expects better of those artists but we expect the best of Kendrick because hes proven to be that guy. They havent so its just meh

it’s a pretty limited viewpoint to have and I think it’s encouraged as part of dumbing people down. Nobody reads any more and they don’t even want us spreading cultural awareness through music either so there’s a campaign to say “music should just be mindless fun “. Rap music can be so much more than that but it seems like they pretty much succeeded in stripping it of it’s original significance

I guess, IDK, for me personally, I used to be heavy into pretty much everyone on the Rhymesayers roster but then I got to a point where that just wasn't doing it for me.

Maybe its an age thing, but I just don't have this big desire to be lectured or whatever by music, movies, etc at this point. I'll just have my "candy" and once I'm done, I'll turn it off and I'll proceed with my day. If other people f*** with conscious, cool

Yeah music is meant to be fun on some level. Some people listen cause they wanna snap their fingers and say stuff like vibe and preach. Others listen cause they wanna turn off their brain and hear a line like “cream soda Faygo yeah I’m still dreamin, they hatin on me I don’t know the reason”

It’s not meant to be the deepest line but mfs can act like it’s deep because it could be to them. The simplest lines can be deep to mfs. Peep Ecco2k verse on so what

    “Ever since we’ve blown up
    People swear they know us
Margiela loafers but I know he’s a poser”

Last line is a top iconic drain line. Why? Far from conscious. Literally a flex line but a unique one suggesting an alt style or alt approach to flexing on people and being that kinda rapper or being that nigga/bitch. Hella drain and ecco2k fans be non binary or gender non conforming anyway and drain lyrics especially ecco2k bars can be hella validating in that way… like Cardi B for enbies.

It’s all about being a non conventional person sometimes. Non conventional people sometimes will touch everything except Tyler the Creator and like that kind of rap in general because in this day and age it feels like the epitomization of normie. Or the counterpoint to the weirdly over aestheticized anime alt faux Asian rocker emo rapper aesthetics of someone like Uzi or the straight up if I’m a b**** then I’m the baddest b**** hoeization of the masculine energy through the lens of a nigga like Carti. Let’s say Carti don’t even claim an orientation or gender identity and if you asked him he might just say he a regular nigga but he clearly don’t act or dress like one a lot of the time adding to his appeal. Think Marilyn Manson or even Prince. Dennis Rodman if you want. I can be or act like this without ever needing to stop being a nigga. It feels convenient. No label even cause some niggas exhausted with that and knows there’s baggage that comes with it. So niggas will just dress, act and take a pic like a hoe and let the world come up with its own interpretation. For them they’re just doing them. It’s not deep… it’s me period. You don’t like it, suck my d***. Low key even softer gay niggas don’t fw Carti cause they might perceive him as just a regular nigga doing s*** they act like is necessarily super political. I mean it can be but Carti doing it is definitely almost as political if not just as/more than lil Nas x doing it. X is a political activist at this point but Carti just sort of the barrier breaker. Hood niggas gonna start wearing heels now while pulling up on their opps. Ain’t no necessary meaning to that but it would be an exciting era.

Well eh call it a difference of taste my man. No need to be a hater. To be fair, I like earl a little bit but Tyler’s style puts me off. Not being homophobic but dude just feels lame or boring/normie to me. I’m not the biggest lil Nas x fan musically but he definitely kinda just an interesting person and his aesthetic is interesting sometimes. I know he troll for fame at this point but that’s why I kinda like him. Guess that makes me immature but hey the rapper this forum is named after is basically an immature attention w**** at this point so nobody should care that much right? Idk

Feel like I posted itt already but I think what people don't like about conscious rap is how it can come off as preachy a lot of times. Doesn't help that a fair amount of conscious rappers have that "I'm smarter than everybody" attitude when in reality they're pretty f***ing stupid themselves just going off of things they have said in interviews and on Twitter.

All in all though I do like conscious rap. Been one of my favorite subgenres of rap since I was a kid. But I totally understand the vitriol some have for it. Ultimately it comes down to some "nerd vs jock" kinda thing.

Wasn’t even saying that but what’s masculine about Tyler the Creator or Saba’s music?

At least Billy Woods and Ka I’ll give you have “typically” masculine themes but the two niggas above feel like they’d appeal to rap fans with more soft palates

They’re clearly kinda soft rap and people who like them tend to reflect that give or take. Not saying every trap fan is masculine but in my neck of the woods, if niggas wanna perform masculinity they bumping some trap s***.

I will admit hella yung lean and 6 dogs fans could be legitimately nerdy dudes and probably some of the least athletically gifted and physically blessed out of the general rap audience including myself. I fall readily into that stereotype. Have you ever heard people like what appeals to their own traits or sense of self? That’s what appeals to me nigga get over it.

I’m not saying them niggas like Saba or Tyler or whatever not even attractive athletic niggas they are. And their fans be hella extroverted. They also might often be gay or women or maybe even straight attractive men such as yourself. Cool. No skin off my back. Hop off my d***.

Also I never said lyrical so once again, total misrepresentation and you heard whatever you wanted to hear based off your perceptions of me you don’t take me seriously cause I’m not American, I don't take your opinion on me seriously cause you are. Americans love placing American standards on non American people and playing that game of “hey look at the loser”. I’m from a literally super non woke country and I’m probably woke by the majority of my countries’ standards. F*** that bro even by American standards I’m woke but niggas like putting labels on me cause they read a few things they didn’t like on f***ing ktt2

To get to my final point, I never said lyrical rap wasn’t masculine just certain variations of it but you thought I f***ing said lyrical dumbass. I was talking about Tyler the Creator not f***ing Mobb Deep or Nas you idiot. And again, I’ll admit there’s nothing masculine about f***ing 6 dogs or Yung lean other than they have weirdo rap that mostly appeals to stupid loser looking niggas like me. That’s it.
