yea i think with cole if they werent there for the mixtape era, the hype and early albums they might have a hard time understanding why people love him so much

and going back to the mixtapes now, while they do hold up, doesnt really have the context of what rap was like in 09-10 lol

Yea it’s just wild to me sometimes, like Drake and Cole were literally 106 & Park darlings. Who Dat was a video premier and so were almost all of Drake’s singles at the time and the rest of Cole’s. That “Let Nas Down” s*** became so overplayed on the internet people forget how big he was from the very first album. I think Kendrick just had the better recipe of hits on his first album and the mini pop run the year after which I think created this mindset that Cole was never there to begin with as time moved on.

youre not wrong, but jay, dre, and waynes cosigns have more power than goodie mob or even ye

Kanye cosigned people but still always put them behind himself in a way. I do think you're right tho in the sense that travis wouldnt be as big as he is without the kanye cosign

big factor is they were all cosigned by greats.

    Cole had Jay
    Kendrick had Dre
    Drake had Wayne

future and travis are hot but neither are lyrical to the extent of the big 3.

Yep and if you were around when they all started they just took off differently from the others and established large fanbases so the big three started being thrown around

If Travis and Future were more lyrical, they'd be in the convo too tbh.

Travis strongest year was 2018/2020 to me. He was undeniable in terms of commercial success and critical acclaim at that time

Cole definitely cemented himself before Kendrick it’s just GKMC took s*** to another level but even Kendrick said it on the heart series “If J Cole running you think I can take his place” he as being dead serious too lol

not only that but those videos i linked showed that they were mentored directly by Dungeon Family and Ye respectively

Future came up in 2011, two years after the initial big 3
Trav came up in 2013, four years after initial big 3

they would have to be in the big 5 convo overall if anything

yea and cole really made his "beloved" album at album 3 instead of album 2 which prob shifted his narrative outside of his core fanbase

You get why someone would call em that in like the early 2010s to mid 2010s. But Future since 2015, Trav since 2018, Carti since idk like 2021 have all been bigger rappers IMO than Cole in my humble opinion.

it's not just about sales, it's about actually being a rapper and not just saying random BS over a trap beat

I have never heard a verse ever from Future that impressed me tbh.

Travis shown signs with Owl Pharaoh imo even tho he's more focused on melodies and musical ideas.

I been listening to Travis since OP era too but that s*** long gone lol

These days I can barely find a Travis verse that isn’t more than non sequitur lines that vaguely relate to the hook.

I’m not saying Future is an “impressive” lyricist but when he gets to talking about some real s*** or wants to dedicate himself to speaking on his “experiences” it at least makes for interesting stories.

s*** was a whole different era. i remember dying for anything fresh and different right around when so far gone and the warm up came out

ringtone era had hip hop on life support

Even if we talking sales, Carti and Future barely sniff Cole’s numbers. ESPECIALLY Carti. Like this Future’s first time doing 251k and Cole has done that and much greater on every single album. Take away Travis’ merch finesse and he ain’t rated either lmfao

Also there's never going to be a "new big three." No one can replace any of them in the big three either. It's a specific nickname given to these specific artists at a specific time cause it was probably the most clear cut "new generation" rap's ever had. That's all it is.

jus realized that lol you're right. Cole consistently hitting almost 300-400k while WLR barely hit 100k. even if carti drops rn with all his hype I predict 150k max.

And yeah Travis basically botting his numbers always gonna look weak next to big 3 getting big numbers off real streams and CD sales
