thinking about music as a product isn't fair imo so when people say "the free market always wins - sales = quality" is extremely stupid
the comparison we should be making (since music is an art form) is the difference between kitsch and high art
so just bc kitsch is mass produced and is produced to be popular that makes it better than a single piece by Monet?
I know this thread is lowkey about CLB and this s*** is getting corny but CLB = kitsch
because great marketing doesn't equal great quality of the product.. this is an issue across all businesses and products, not just music.
ITT: twilight, harry potter and avengers higher quality than most oscar winning films
harry potter and avengers yes
unironically
Because if it doesn’t favour the narrative it doesn’t matter
Because it isn't

The people who say sales don't equal quality are nerds. I can't imagine listening to more than a handful of the most popular albums every year. I am only interested in art that appeals to the widest swath of the population.
So you listen to music to fit in.
Gotcha

Exactly, the merits of art are irrelevant to me. If the new trend was listening to bowel movements, I would do the Tik Tok bowel movement challenge.
the biggest sales come from the first week, literally when people
HAVEN’T HEARD THE ALBUM!
pretty simple, sales don’t equal quality
this isnt even true 💀💀
unless you mean the highest week which still doesn't disprove the point.

why does the opinion of 10 white people outweigh the majority?
because mcdonalds doesnt make the best burger
bruh these casual listeners do not understand music at all
they look at sales and Instagram followers. He's popping we rocking type beat...
S*** movies make more than good movies. Same for music. Casuals just want something that’s catchy and they can “vibe” to. Not saying all music that sells the most isn’t good, but if you look at history; the artist that sold most in an era usually end up being looked down upon in the next few decades
what we really need to reckon with is that "sales" /=/ "popularity" esp now that units moved is so intangible
the depth of interest and devotion people have for a work of art or artist is, i think, a relatively empirical measure of quality-as-it-exists, and is yet hard to quantify (altho BTS fans have demonstrated it pretty well)
Is "Transformers" better than "The Godfather"?
You are a top tier poster, G. Bout to become my only follow. Congrats
Is "Transformers" better than "The Godfather"?
The Godfather was a massive box office hit when it came out and has definitely made an incredible amount of money over its 50 years of re-releases home video sales and cable broadcasts so i don't think that's a good example of sales not /=/ quality
but of course, if someone saw the godfather not knowing anything about its fame and financial success, they would recognize its quality, and that gets closer to the ineffable nature of quality

There is a cost advantage to McDonald’s over higher quality burgers, though. It takes the same amount of time and money to listen to anyone’s music, so there is equivalent cost and the choice is simply up to the listener.
