People complain about how music is trash now or they r «bOrN in The WronG GeNerAtIon» or whatever.

I mean our harmonic vocabulary is the biggest its ever been.

Besides one could make a sound argument for popular music/stream amounts.
    As an example:

One could argue that Ed Sheeran is better than Frank Ocean.
Because Ed’s music/product is more palettable to the masses and attracting more people. I disagree of course but:

    Whats the best product?
The product you love subjectively and most others dont appreciate? Or the half assed pop music that the majority of people find decent.

you're speaking purely out of subjectivity

what you like does not deem quality

Yes, I believe music and music quality are subjective.

thinking about music as a product isn't fair imo so when people say "the free market always wins - sales = quality" is extremely stupid

the comparison we should be making (since music is an art form) is the difference between kitsch and high art

so just bc kitsch is mass produced and is produced to be popular that makes it better than a single piece by Monet?

I know this thread is lowkey about CLB and this s*** is getting corny but CLB = kitsch

But to me, you’re arguing what makes something “better” to which I’d say yes, sales are not a factor. But determining if something is of good quality (not in comparison to anything, just good quality or bad quality) I think sales and popularity can be 1 metric out of many.

Sales, now more than ever, represent what people are listening to. Streams are incorporated into sales.

If a project is doing crazy numbers, even outside the first week, obviously people want to listen to it.

And if it wasn't good, why would people listen?

    There's definitley a correlation

"if sitting on your coach all day isn't good for you, why do so many people do it?"

This nuanced opinion is correct, but your thread title implies that sales alone is a valid metric

“Why do we say sales don’t equal quality” I mean I don’t see how it implies sales are the end all be all, just an indicator that people don’t want to regard but my bad 🤷🏾‍♂️

I also think my initial post clears up any implications since I say low sales don’t speak to quality

why does the opinion of 10 white people outweigh the majority?

it's not about the academy it's about most oscar nom/winning films are actually artistic and have depth and not just "we want to please as many ppl to get as much money as possible"

There is a cost advantage to McDonald’s over higher quality burgers, though. It takes the same amount of time and money to listen to anyone’s music, so there is equivalent cost and the choice is simply up to the listener.

you could say the same thing about time used to listen to each track/album

either way mcdonalds is not know for quality, yet it sells millions of units

Music all costs the same for someone to listen. How do you compare that to Burgers lol.

You could say they can’t be compared because the price of all music is the same, but one could also argue that there’s still “cheapness” to the quality of McDonalds in the same way there’s “cheapness” to the quality of certain popular music

    Or something lol

Just listen to the music you like man why it gotta be the most popular I don't get it?
