This is really the main reason why I like Whole Lotta Red wayyyy more than his previous albums

Carti is never really saying anything interesting, so his previous albums just didn’t do much for me. He’d always get overpowered by the production

But on WLR he actually does interesting s*** with his voice, and he brings energy to the album

i've been thinking about this too because to me there is a huge difference between trav's nothing raps and carti's nothing raps.

easy thing to attribute it to is that the appeal of carti's music is also just rougher around the edges and punkier etc. the entire musical presentation is different and so the threshold for lyrics is different.

WLR is a bunch of short hard ass rough songs, Utopia is lush and extremely dramatic, self-serious etc. the lyrics that each album's beats and overall aesthetic call for is much different.

but my other theory rn it's image/personality and basically everything outside of just the music

carti has a clear image, cult of personality, well defined persona, etc. whether it's even directly created by him or just built up by fans and the allure of his whole vibe, its strong. and when you bring all of that to a track where you're saying nothing, we attach way more too it and the persona fills in the gaps and becomes part of the listening experience. even if he's saying nothing, we think of the entire package and attach all of that stuff to it too.

trav obviously has a very cool image and more glossy brand but his personality is pretty dry and charismaless and so theres less to attach with and less to fill in the obvious emptiness

What is so interesting about Cartis vocals? Screeching, making random noises and doing goofy voices is that interesting?

People talk like Carti is one of the best vocalists oat or something. He’s not doing anything impressive. If a random no name did the stuff he did they would get clowned

Travis Scott has received backlash over the lack of lyrical substance across his career and especially recently with the release of UTOPIA

However, man like Carti has been releasing music about nothing (hide it in my sock ?? Molly my bean ????) for half a decade now but everyone seems to be okay with it

What makes Carti’s poor content acceptable ? Is it because he works with meme producers (Pierre Bourne and wake up filthy) ?

it isn’t necessarily just the lack of substance and lyrical content for Travis, it’s that he’s painfully generic and injects little to no personality into any of his vocal performances whatsoever

it’s even worse because some references came out and some of these verses he didn’t even write at all, and instead just copy and pasted lyrics from it with no changes whatsoever lmao

Carti in between his vocal pitch shifts, ad libs and changing inflections, it’s all very unique and standout and you can tell that it’s Carti just how he utilizes his voice alone, which makes up for his lack of lyrical content

i still think he gets a lot of grace on this site anyways though cause niggas like to d***ride
