because there’s racial undertones to dismissing a certain brand of music as “for white people” versus anything with making fun of a Billboard stan

Is the racial undertone just that it's stereotypically white people though? How are we jumping to "Black people are a monolith"

I feel like those are two separate things

The thing with this conversation is that there's multiple layers to it. I see these issues as a couple things going on. One is the white hip hop heads. Enough said. The other is "alternative" black people who feel alienated for their tastes because they deviate from the (perceived) cultural norm or stereotypes. This happens both inside and outside the culture. When it's from inside the culture its alienating and when its from outside the culture there's heavy racial undertones from non blacks and especially from critics who see them as "one of the good ones".

These layers often conicide with another and lead to instances like JPEG mafia where he gets written off as both someone for the alternative "weirdos" (inside the culture) AND swept up and adored by the white hip hop heads (outside the culture).

Yeah I can def agree with this

if you have a canon of artists like Death Grips, JPEGMAFIA, and Danny Brown

and some dude on here says “lol this is all white people music”

even that statement in itself implies that black people listen to a certain brand of music exclusively (traditional, non-offensive, straightforward, basic stuff, whatever, only because those types of artists are obviously unique, experimental and out of the box, let alone the critical acclaim that they have etc.) and that white people are the only ones that can understand and enjoy any music that may be challenging or at least subversive of genre norms (like their tastemakers or some s***)

the issue here isn’t necessarily the audience of these artists, no one is disputing that they have a primarily white fanbase, nor that these artists typically don’t appeal to a certain brand of white hipster fan, it’s the actual content of the music that apparently black people just can’t (typically) get into, while white people can

hence why im asking what is it about Danny/JPEG’s or any of these other artists’ music that appeals so much to white dudes, and they won’t answer because they know it risks coming off as racist lmao

They are inherently alternative rap artists though no? It's pretty clear why they appeal to white fanbases. There's even a subset of people on here who's favorite projects are TPAB, Yeezus, Blonde, WLR etc. All of these appeal to white fanbases in some way. And alot of these incorporate rock elements or electronic in some way (outside of TPAB)

I think if you're a fan of alot of this music it can come off as being dismissive, but the truth is that people consider it "scaring the hoes" music to the point of jpeg dropping an album with that title

I don't think people are trying to lump black people into anything by saying that, but rather just joking about the white fanbase that heavily also listen to them

idk man we’ll agree to disagree i guess, i think the fact that basically everyone in here who adheres to this idea of white-black music won’t even articulate what they mean by that, should tell you that they prob know it’s gonna sound racist whatever they say

the fact that something that has rock/electronic influences or whatever the hell just in general is even considered white appealing or will have dudes calling you white is problematic in itself

    super layered issue

Someone who grew up listening to rock will probably enjoy MBDTF prog rock influences or Yeezus Black Skinhead-esque songs, compared to something like Gone or All Falls Down no?

It's easier for them to find something in common in the music I guess, idk I see what you're saying too though

Music is very much culture based at the end of the day

Think it’s just a USA thing tbh. Go overseas and black people love all that “white people” music

Oh yeah 100%. Very much a US thing. That UK Grime s*** is super electronic influenced and they have just as much white and black rappers etc. Just different upbringings overall

is anyone in here going to explain why?

Why it appeals to more white people?

I think its because white people(esp hipsters) place a premium on the idea of inaccessibility, that something more abstract or abrasive is inherently better. Along with being distant from black culture

Which is why many white critics like needledrop were lukewarm on experimental acts like Young Thug but praised acts like Jpegmafia

Jpegmafia fits with their idea of experimental(loud, internet culture based, and unattractive) while Young Thug doesnt as his roots are still in what black people like.

Which is why one is able to change part of the music landscape and the other cant escape death grips/reddit neighboring

    black hedi slimane

with that being said, i think when black artists make “weird” music, often they’re seen as an academic, lot of white friend types. sadly the barriers to music has increased over past few decades. before the black middle class, thrived with musicians. now we’re seeing kids still have their creative impulses. it’s just all channeled into best making.

from a purely economical standpoint, it makes the most sense. and if you get good, why not tame your impulses to become a famous producer with large placements?

so yea with all that being said i just think black music has and always will be the most experimental (the best experimental artists jn the west rn are black, klein, keiyaa, dean, slauson malone, etc) it’s just easy to say yt ppl like other kind of music when american culture ingrained into us that we are hyper sexual beings who don’t find pleasure in sophisticated things such as the arts, but only thru sex, acting out, etc. it’s all age old stereotypes, that people play into, black and white.

    Facts. It's internalized racism.
