The album where Kanye borrowed from white rockers was Yeezus. Wtf are y'all talking about itt? MBDTF is as rap as rap gets, he just put the modern grandiose twist on it. It's a combination of all his previous albums up to that point. Got back to back posse cuts full of pure rap, a classic rap intro, a classic pure rap song with f***in Raekwon as track 2, Pusha f***in T as a feature on the biggest song, Nicki with the verse of her life, Kanye rapping his ass off all over the album, Cyhi verse of his life etc...

And what album since MBDTF comes even close to that sound? Only one is WTT and maybe Rodeo but Trav is trash compared to prime Kanye so what are y'all talking about?

No one said the album wasn't Hip Hop, it definitely wasn't conventional Hip Hop is what I'm saying. He wasn't trying to get dudes to bang his new album as loud as possible on their cars sound system like Waka was, he wanted to compete on the world stage by using Hip Hop, and it honestly worked.

Its not an album without skips for me, but the music/production/lyrics are so good that its a 6 star album for me.

Normally I only drop 6 stars on albums without skips but Dark Fantasy took rap into unseen height for me

Is Branda's Got A Baby or Keep Yo Head Up conventional hip hop? Conventional hip hip has to bump in the whip? What is this 2025 ass way of thinking man?

Waka ain't hip hop, hes trap. That's a subgenre. Like Crunk

I won't say the album sucks, but it's definitely overproduced. Big reason Kanye got so much praise in the first place is cause he was willing to take risk that others weren't willing to. Critics loved MBDTF cause he brought a rockstar edge to Hip Hop, but that image is outdated now cause everyone followed that blueprint and flipped it on it's head.

MBDTF didn't age well because where Kanye was borrowing from the white rockers, Hip Hop culture adapted to that s*** and now it's part of the culture. In 2010, that s*** was a tonal shift for Hip Hop.

you niggas have to be stopped with this revisionist s***

That’s the Rosewood mentality, like affluence, like not cursing loud in public, pulling out chairs for your lady, opening up car doors, calling your grandmother, taking care of your kids. That’s where I’m at at 33 and it’s ill ’cause I’m at this really good emotional, great place in my life, and they’re always saying in hip-hop that you have to be in a dark place to make great hip-hop. I feel like I rap better than I’ve ever rapped at this point. I be writing raps and I don’t even realize how positive they are. They just sound like regular good negative raps.”

i wonder what would happen if a younger artist like carti, baby, uzi, etc. put that much effort into an album like this

or if they could even do such a thing

I mean yeah, at the time, 2Pac was considered conventional Hip Hop. In 2010, Wayne/Waka etc was considered conventional Hip Hop. Kanye was not conventional Hip Hop and didn't try to be, MBDTF didn't necessarily appeal to the conventional Hip Hop listener at the time, but it still had an audience. Same with Cudi and MOTM2

MBDTF is arguably the least perfect album in his discography up until the point where he just flat out stopped caring about music. Horribly mixed, songs don’t end when they feel like they should, a mishmash of ideas from some of the featured artists who go off on their own tangent regardless of the song topic, it’s a mess. And it’s also the greatest album of all-time.

In about 5 years people will start saying Yeezus was trash and that Donda and TLOP are the true Kanye classics. Very predictable how KTT goes in these cycles

That's Kanyes vision, I'm giving you my opinion. Things change. I'm talking about the music/art, not the person, it's seperate.

How do you even get that from what he said? He’s talking about the sound and cultural influence how MBDTF’s “rockstar” style used to be groundbreaking but now feels dated because hip-hop absorbed it.

You turned that into some “he was wearing suits and acting white” thing, which isn’t even close to what he meant. The comparison doesn’t make sense one’s about production and evolution, the other’s about image and identity.
