The Zimmerman Trial is one of the most depressing events in recent history because it's really a landmark touchstone for how the media exploits racial tensions to extreme extents.The effects are still being felt. The way the trial was covered and the media's place in the trial is very distinct from the trial itself and arguably has caused even worse racial tensions, especially in lieu of causing radicalization (as I mentioned). While the OJ case definitely was similar to some extent, with the OJ trial in the very least there was still the veneer of celebrity; the Zimmerman Trial by comparison was a move to the realm of everyday individuals, the equivalent of "it could happen to you"; the media lied about Zimmerman's ethnicity, photoshopped pictures to whiten his skin, used edited & outdated pictures of Trayvon, and most egregiously edited audio from the incident. This isn't a defense of Zimmerman/the Trial either so don't read it that way - it's just a point out that the irresponsible and exploitative handling of the case's reporting was a huge turning point in how media covered race-related events and exploited legitimate community outrages.
