It just took a while for country fans to get used to streaming their artists.

atthepyramidsbut anyway it’s the pendulum swinging back and forth as it always does. it swung towards rap when the streaming era began. it swung back to pop for a little and now it’s towards country. rock will probably have a resurgence and then rap. that’s just how it goes

Rock fans are some of the biggest gatekeepers in music so I don't see it coming back for that reason.
The level of vile hatred MGK received from snobby Rock fans proves this. Rock fans would rather stick with the same "Dad Rock" artists than embrace newcomers in the scene.
But I do see Country filling in the gap between Rap and Pop just like EDM music did in the early 2010's.

It was a slow adoption to streaming.
Look at the country sales before streaming. Those artists were RUNNING IT UP

Yet they ignore that Rock fans almost never embraced mainstream and Pop Friendly Rock artists like Imagine Dragons or Maroon 5 as their own.
And MGK's fanbase mainly consists of teenage girls going through their Pop Punk revival phase.
The reality is that the "Dad Rock" brand is way too strong to compete for newer bands which is why Rock is mainly thriving in the indie scene rn where they can depend on core fans as opposed to mainstream ones.

some of these pitchfork acclaimed indie bands get away with murder, frontmen that can’t sing and really boring production
