i feel like europeans (eastern europeans especially) have a warped view of "american culture" that's stuck in 2004 where 50 cent is like the greatest rapper of all time / most emblematic of what they view as hip hop

probably something to do with the fall of the ussr

people love 50 because he came up when lots of people were young and hes just that good and got actual hits to him, x is in that category too

but people f*** with trav drake and kendrick just as much so its not like current rap isnt big over there

also a lot of rappers are kinda washed too though we cant just skip past that. there should be a diff word for it that isnt as dismissive of the entire musician but it is what it is

i dont think people calling someone like Game or Snoop washed are 'obsessed' with the label

But Game just dropped a pretty fire album that will probably be among the best rap albums this year and I was just seeing some Akademiks video where in some random week in the summer it was among the top played Apple Music albums or something like that, competing with ICEMAN, Bully and the Mount Rushmore Lil Baby album cover from a few years ago. The only way someone would say he's washed is because he doesn't have some huge record out but does Veeze Lil Baby Lucki Carti have a huge record out right now? Lol aside from maybe Ganger they certainly haven't dropped an actual RAP album better than this in the past few years

I don’t care what the numbers look like. This album is a classic.

  • I think as 3 stacks said it before it's definitely bc as it's in the name hip hop is very much about being "hip" and trying but failing to be hip gets cringe very quickly.

there's very few rappers that have managed to stay relevant for more than a few years bc it isn't easy to either be timeless enough for your style to not age badly (someone like mos def maybe) or be tapped in w what's new enough to keep up with a constantly changing landscape (kanye for a while)

Hip hop was built on being hip and focused on the youth culture. As the genre ages the pitfalls of that mentality still lingers and has only really started to be addressed with older acts as they continue to age gracefully with their music

what's the point in pretending someone is still good

to your point tho: i think it's a media literacy thing because how do we expect someone to continuously reinvent the wheel when he's lucky he did it the first time?

  • Hip hop and rap has always been more competitive then other genres

    Good question!

  • feel like a big reason is because one of the basis of rap is being boastful and braggadocios. so there is always the time in one's career where their abilities and popularity align with their arrogance and confidence but once either one of those or any other attribute decreases significantly which in most cases comes naturally with age, us as humans i think innately just love seeing someone be knocked off of a "high horse" especially when no humility was ever shown while said person was at the intersection and peak of youth x power. i mean you could argue that humility isn't really hiphop. so by the time guys get older and aren't as naturally at the top of their game and have lost popularity we as a collective are almost glad to see it because majority of their subject matter has been about how great they are year after year. just a theory

  • young hip hop fans are stupid young and dont have common sense and make them selves look like a******s when they stupid s*** like this because they dont think before what they say

  • Younger generations dumb as bricks. Specially this past one. No respect at all for the legends.
