It's true that the same type of person becomes an loser and militiaman, but they're two distinct outcomes of a certain base condition according to the social, economic, political, and cultural context, rather than one being an outgrowth of another. Frankly losers are far preferable if you look at the havoc wreaked in mid-1600s Germany, 1910s-20s China, contemporary West Africa, etc. And I get he's using "loser armies" as a way to draw in viewers, but I still think it's interesting and worthwhile to draw out the similarities and differences.
