1. The British played Hindus and Muslims against each other. Because that way they could control India easier.
2. Riots in India were common back then. Muslims wanted Pakistan. Hindus retaliated back with violence.
3. Hindutva was founded in the 1920s to be more exact. At a time, those public riots were at an all time high.
4. However, the Hindutva movement did not find any real success in India until really 2014. Which in my opinion is a result of Hindus becomes more radicalised over a course of these 100 years because of these three wars against Pakistan, Kashmir, terrorist attacks etc.

this is all true except you fumbled on part 4. gandhian/nehruian social democracy over the course of 6 decades failed to create a coherent multinational identity, destroy the caste system, or pull billions of people out of poverty. hindutva promised a strong national identity at the cost of explicit social exclusion, which appealed to certain segments of hindu high society. if what you are saying was true then why did India not become explicitly fascist after it gained independence? why did this only happen 60 years later? I generally agree that fascism is a conspiracy against most of the population who reject it but why were fascists able to come to power in the 2010s? only explanation I can think of is that it was the world system and India's place in it that actually changed and the Indian bourgeoisie responded accordingly.

However, the Hindutva movement is luckily losing steam. Because the BJP couldn't realize the promises they made. The biggest state in India voted largely for the Socialist party this time. And the BJP didn't win a seat in my state again, It will take some time but they are fumbling so many things day by day that I think in some time it will be over for them.
