I guess too much saturation? There really isn’t as many lanes as there once was, with SoundCloud people were friending to discover new artists, underground was at its peak.
    The Underacheivers
    Flatbush Zombies
    Members Only
    Da$H
    Lucki
    Chester Watson

Just to name a few. They’re still underground. Some people even considered DOOM underground.

I’ve always just interpreted the term as lesser known, them against the world, just flat out musicians making noise that people overground can’t hear. That concept is just scaring the hoes now

The fact that his sound is being replicated, and his beat choices and in general the total sonic aspect of it, goes to show that he is the only one that is innovative and has actually influenced the genre, increasingly even more. While I don't see these other rappers that get mentioned, have nowhere near that type of influence. Yeat is already past some sort of level for sure, but he can go even further because it's obvious that he has the talent to do it. I do listen to some of Yeat too, he dope imo especially when you see that it's not exactly brimming with new and refreshing artists like him.

I agree whole heartedly. I have not done a full Yeat album listen, but I still see he’s atleast evolving which most artists can’t do. I really wish him a successful career he’s killing it, and that’s coming from me a dust head

They don't attach their songs to Tiktok s***posts and dance videos enough.

    Tiktok goated for music discovery

    Tiktok goated for music discovery

I was saying it facetiously but there is truth in it forreal. Take $ilkmoney for example.

This track dropped back in 2019 off his album GTFOMD, but it wasn't even a single he released prior to the album. His song Africa was the leading and only single off that album. But around 2021/2022, My Potna Dem randomly blew up because it was being used in some Tiktok webcomic and now it's his biggest solo song

Tiktok randomly has songs blowing up, and if underground rappers really wanted to (and hopefully they don't) they could just start posting their songs onto anime Tiktoks and it'll likely help get them some boost.

Let’s just be real. Hip hop is dead for newer generations at this point. Old heads are carrying it on its back with little to no hope of the newer gen being able to fully carry that flame. When Drake, Coke, Kendrick , future retire then hiphop will be officially dead.

And the article frames the underground as whats keeping hip hop up cuz older artist are beefing, but then say they are niche. So if the underground is niche and wont be that big and the ageing ppl are mid now, whats going on with rap?

Yall tried to kill me for it but in reality , women are keeping hip hop afloat mainstream wise

    Mr America

Last gen, Uzi, Yachty, Pump etc were all underground at most maybe a year, before blowing up, and they were on hits, people outside the internet knew them, millions of views, s*** uzi and carti were on the vma’s a year after blowing up. But with the new underground, they’re getting like half , maybe less than that, certain ppl who were up next still underground a bit after a year, even the big ones such as Lone & Ken & Yeat havent even made VMAs or anything. Yeat is prob the biggest but doesnt seem like the known name Uzi was at his peak etc

Whats the disconnect, shouldnt the youth be the ones uplifting them?

its gotta be a few things

most notably the new energy these boys are giving off is kinda of anti hoes... like yeat is not a sexy boy, his songs for the most part arent getting on the aux when girls get ready

say what you want about carti and uzi but they are marketable in a mainstream way, traditional handsome etc.

the intention of the music is to be disruptive, which is fair because to distance themselves from the status quo they have to stand for everything rap isnt at the moment. but thats counter productive from a success standpoint because the current rap status quo is best selling genre in the world, so of course the opposite of that wont be. when uzi and them were blowing up it was counter culture to make those shiny, glossy mainstream songs

and i think their reflection on american culture is a little lost on foreign markets. i think the melodies and vibes arent resonating with people. weve seen the global counsciousness shift to brighter happier ideas (country, kpop) while these boys are going deeper into the schizo s*** which is cool but its not the same frequncy most people are on right now

it reminds me a bit of rock music after emo, just kind of lost in terms of success, ideology etc
