A lot of people suddenly became long time nip fans after he passed it felt very weird to see

It’s very unfortunate when we lose someone long before their time but we gotta be more receptive of at the very least their music touching new people in their untimely passing. It doesn’t sit right when people gatekeep music

Also he had just dropped a project that was received well so that had something to do with it in addition to what everyone else has said itt

I hope maybe people can connect with him the way i did

  • Op right it's like everyone had something to say about him even though he wasn't shown that love before his death. It really came off as pandering

Admittedly I wasn’t a die hard Nipsey fan before he passed but I had always checked out his tapes and of course VL. After he passed and I revisited his discography it made me appreciate his talent a lot more. He was set to do some incredible things in music and already on top of what he was doing for his community. He was a great person and deserves all the love and praise he received in his passing

Why do people act like he wasn’t coming off the biggest project of his career, in 2018 rap AOTY convos, and Grammy nominated with the “people weren’t checking for Nipsey until he died” narrative? He was a solid human for his community and was trending upwards career wise only to get cut short

  • Jan 11, 2022

I think the timing of his death is key unfortunately. He did all the work beforehand and was finally reaching mainstream success with Victory Lap. That album was his moment regarding his career. Any person that worked for anything can identify with his success, then also have the upmost empathy for that being taken away on some hater s***.

    Not even

Im in Norcal and he was huge out here

Yeah basically cali/ west coast in general tbh

  • Jan 11, 2022

I think it was due to how sudden it was and his public positive image he worked for before he died

Both are true, he was on his way up but his death took him to another level

    Same with Pop Smoke

got the tupac treatment no I won’t elaborate

Because even if you was a fan or not, it was f***ed up to see someone who tried to build up his hood/community get gunned down over nothing i think that would make anyone sad…

you have to be from socal to understand.

    He was a f***in legend

He was extremely popular all the way up in Tacoma too.

  • This is a eulogy type thread. You guys are overreacting

  • He was a respected figure amongst his peers and a leader trying to spread good vibes. Very rarely hear a story about Nipsey without someone mentioning he showed love and tried to give game.

    A Mad Ass Nigga

I get what op saying but this thread should’ve stayed in the drafts

I get why you said this and I respect nip, but you can't be suprised that people asking this. Nip was treated like he had pac level commercial success after he died. Deserved for his influence but to an outsider or someone who like rap but not on nerd levels, it was weird

Like he wasn’t that big but his funeral was at the staples center
Had niggas makin art w him next to Kobe and nobody batted an eye
I still think about his death often and cried watching his funeral and I wasn’t even a fan

a lot of people didn't really see the work he was doing until he died because he wasn't getting plastered on mainstream outlets and didn't have a lot of mainstream radio type singles. he was just getting there around victory lap with songs like Dedication with Kendrick, last time i checc'd music video.
not sure why people itt are acting like this is a disrespectful question.

He definitely wasn't treated like he had Pac level success. He was treated like he had Pac level respect and he did

A lot of mfs were bandwagon after he died but he was a living legend. If you missed out on his come up then you wouldn’t get it

  • Jan 11, 2022

He did a lot for the community a local legend

  • Nip was just so highly regarded and respected by both the young demographic and the OGs out there. Pretty rare to capture both of those audiences so strongly -- a lot of newer rappers don't really command the same respect that Nip did even if people like their music.

Seemed to be on the cusp of blowing up and making big moves too.
