That s*** came out in 1990 they didnt survive for the rest of the decade for a reason: Because they couldnt progress further. By the time 92 hit them 80s rappers were a lost cause because rap was already dramatically changing.

Real progression is Ice Cube with AMW in comparison to NWA.

Scarface progressed with the diary in comparison to them geto boyz tapes

Kool G Rap influenced Nas and even tried to get Def Jam to sign him. Nas is featured on Kool Gs most famous song for a reason. He was doing the mafiaso/organized crime themed rap that Nas, Jay Z, Biggie etc. ended up adopting from Kool G

Kool G laid out the blueprint tbh

    The Darkest Angel

That's about when rap got taken over by the labels so it makes sense they'd push them out and put up their own puppets

    This is an interesting take.

yeah he did, and his 90s s*** i like more than his 80s s***. 80s golden age sounds dated with most of the guys using certain flows, cadence in their voices etc.

kool g rap had similar subject matter on the dj polo albums but he just had a different rapping style. live and let die has some real gangsta s*** on there, its just the style on how he delivered it.

I feel like 80s rappers were just rapping to hype up block parties and house parties except political mfs like Public Enemy nem

  • boobdylan

cause rap got too complex and they couldn’t technically catch up

Early 80’s was simple, but it was late 80’s was when rapping began to get complex.

Chuck D, Ice Cube, LL Cool J, Rakim, KRS-One, Kool G Rap and Big Daddy Kane are prime examples of this.

  • SKYKILLA

You'd like 4,5,6 album from Kool G Rap if you like mafiaso rap. That's probably his most appealing album to new listeners

    Fast Life

  • is this true tho

ll cool j and slick rick both had massive hits in the 90s, so did the beastie boys

  • boobdylan

cause rap got too complex and they couldn’t technically catch up

Not really this as much as it went from just the art of rhyming “i wreck mcs” type raps lol to pretty much lying and becoming a character who could depict cinematic mafioso action movies like Jadakiss or Nas

  • Slick Rick should have had a much deeper career but he shot a nigga and his second/third albums was kinda weak

  • Ice t ice cube dr dre ll kool j are all relevant

wasn't being serious lol, but his delivery feels like it avoids that sense of being antiquated

  • Ll cool j album last year disputed this as it was even better than the dre and snoop album

  • Jan 23

They did, just not mostly from the East Coast cause NWA won the battle for the soul of hiphop in 1991

  • Jan 23

LL being an exception along with the Beastie Boys
