all had successful albums in critic reception and/or sales throughout the 90s

most rappers dont cross over to the next decade besides a dozen or so which is still true today - the 80s are no different but there was still many that continued a career in the 90s. some of them even having major n pivotal albums in the 90s such as LL, public enemy, rakim, scarface, too short and ice cube.

wow another thread i realize is old asl after the fact smh

  • For better or worse--the West took over and most East Coast cats couldn't keep up

  • A mix of arriving too early and hanging it up around the late 90s early 2000s.

Not for nothing though I feel it's a bunch of rappers from the 80s who went on to continue making music that people were and are still fans of.

Off top I can think of: Ice Cube, Ice T (with Bodycount), LL Cool J, Will Smith, Scarface, Kool G Rap, Beastie Boys, Dr. Dre, Slick Rick (will always appreciate a Slick Rick feature), A Tribe Called Quest, De La Soul, and technically MF DOOM.

that "a hop skip & a jump" flow needs to come back frfr

Spaceghostpurrp lowkey had an 80s flow at least on Blackland Radio

Slick Rick didn’t have any relevancy after 1991

his highest charting song came out in 1994

  • Jan 23

Beatie boys didnt just adapt to the 90s but had classic material across 4 decades

honestly Ice-T doesn’t get brought up enough outside of West Coast discussions, he’s very underrated as a pioneer in rap at the time.

He was making gangsta rap before NWA and he could spit well too.

What T albums you recommend peeping? Only ever heard a handful of songs

Lyrically they can rap w snoop and big

lmao Snoop is not even in the same stratosphere lyrically as Kool G Rap or Rakim

  • Bobby_96

Rakim, Big Daddy Kane, and G Rap are lyrically superior to Snoop and Biggie though.

The truth is that the 90s marked the start of rap getting heavily commercialized and controversial and rappers becoming bigger stars with bigger hits.

Edit: Major labels like Death Row and Bad Boy played a big role too.

    Snoop yes Biggie eh

    Start with Power.

The cover alone made Darlene Ortiz into a legend.

Feel like the Nelly stuff marked the end for him. He came off as old man yelling at clouds and people didn’t take him as seriously after that
