I feel you
I’d consider the Jimi Hendrix experience group as a black group because the main man is black and he made “black” music but he wasn’t accepted by the black community overall because of his band mates and because he was considered to be making “white” music ironically
Heard that the love of his life left him because she felt he sold out black music as well
Do you agree he sold out black music? (please excuse my ignorance: I'm not very familiar with his music/history only know his name and couple of performances)
@op you’re always up to date on the pop culture quotes & interviews & I always appreciate the threads you make

I don’t think he sold out black music at all. People just felt he was because the media played him up to be the sexual d***gie hippie rebellious black man, and he was a showman since the start of his career (playing guitar with teeth, setting guitar on fire) but he’d always been that way that’s why he got kicked out (or left) little Richards band because Richard felt he was taking the shine away from him
He probably played a bit into it as well but he only 24 and by the time he reached 26 he wanted to be accepted by the black community and had a black band and made “blakcker” music so to say
But no I don’t think he ever sold out or made compromises with his music to appease a white audience
what lol
What does selling out have to do with being a black group or not what didn’t you understand

they hired fergie and stopped making black soulful music its very simple
“Not a black group” doesnt make sense though u right he worded it wrong I think he meant not considered music for black people
It probably hurt that black female singer when they discarded her to be replaced by Fergie and see commercial succes...
She made a YouTube video

That’s not true
She made a YouTube video
I read an article about it. she seems to be over it today
Not being able to be herself and having to code switch def hurt her in her developing years (teens early + adult life) and prompted her early departure from the group but today she's fine I guess
Read this entirely wrong and thought title said 'considered a backshot group'
why do you feel that way?
They still made plenty of soulful songs with fergie
Rap started off strong in the black community, but it is not black owned. BEP can't possibly be a black group when it started out as a multi cultural rap group. That was the appeal. Look at digable planets. Their female representation was a brazilian woman. She could ride a beat too, very talented. Will I am doesn't need to seek validation nor does he need to feel sad. We know what you have done for the culture rather it be rap, pop, or whatever other genre you accepted.

oh Im talking about 2009 and onward with Dirty bit, rock that body and all that. I think that overshadowed all the stuff they did before with her and that’s what he’s talking about
but Im white so ill be swiftly leaving the thread cause this aint up for my discussion!
When you think of Jazz, you no longer think of Black anymore.
Interesting take.
I see what he means, it’s the most questionable of his examples but modern jazz is Jacob Colier and other jazz music school types, they’re usually good about acknowledging the roots but still

I go to a music school and am friends with many jazz majors and performers, they laugh in the face of the likes of Jacob Collier. I’m not hip to jazz like that, but many many jazz guys I know irl hate that guy.
They didn’t make “black” music but that’s because they didn’t make “black” music, and shouldn’t be equated to them having huge success
The implications of saying “huge success = non-black” are just weird to me

Little late for that buddy
