Who ever called him a musical genius? You guys throw these outrageous claims out there that nobody claimed.

    Can’t read?

I said he cemented his spot as this legendary figure through his persona rather than musical talent which is not the norm. This is in response to a thread calling into question how good his music was. So I’m partially agreeing with op that he wasn’t especially musically gifted but made it up in other regards

it’s not really wrong it’s just a subjective opinion. it wasn’t like op just straight up called him mediocrity without backing up why he thinks so. also he’s getting proven right about not being able to not d***suck him cos people are being way too touchy about it

Rip Mac but I think he was mostly loved because of his personality and place in rap. Really kind and supportive guy making slightly above average music made him very palatable especially bc no one has big as him (at the time) was rapping over fly lo type stuff & having collabs range from Earl to Juicy J.

He definitely had gems but I think he mostly earned his spot by being a cool guy rather than a musical genius

i do recall those who cares about swimming astroworld dropping posts so i do feel like a lot of the love is faked and out of some kind of guilt now. especially with the pushback astro gets sometimes

It 100% is, the fake love and revisionist history is clear as day to ppl who remember summer 2018 lol

mac's early music definitely wasn't dog s***, people only say this because of blue slide park. KIDS, BDE, and I Love Life aren't "amazing" but they're not bad, and they're within the range of talent and skill as most skilled upcomers before they hit their stride. Plus they have classics on them too, i.e. Nikes on my feet, Kool Aid & Frozen Pizza, and Poppy off KIDS.
I get not liking Mac's music especially as later in his career he kinda veered off from hip hop entirely, but it's weird to act like he's somehow a mediocre artist in the industry. Like what is the comparison supposed to be for him to be mediocre? He's mediocre compared to which contemporary?
I agree though that yes, to a degree his later music is more meaningful because of the context of the beginning of his career. That's a redundant thing to point out though because that's the case with every single artist ever. Like would MBDTF be as meaningful if Kanye's entire career and public antics didn't exist leading up to it contextually? Would 4:44 be as meaningful if Jay-Z didn't have the experiences he's talking about on the album in the public eye? Artistry is largely tied to the context of the art when it's based on experience so like yeah no s*** some dude who was a happy frat kid excited about hip hop and music turning into a depressed jaded dude experimenting stylistically with music is reflected contextually in how people feel about the music in parallel to that

If Faces got a mainstream album push people wouldve called it classic

    It's a classic regardless

  • I feel like his catalog is actually really strong because I f*** with every album he's done since Macadelic.
