More formally known as scat-singing - vocal jazz-born vocal improvisation with wordless sounds, this is a common method used in the upper echelon of the songwriting industry (cause let’s face it, it’s an industry) to make songs we have all loved:
A good way to do it and not have it be so overwhelming is to use a title or a lyric as a jumping off point for your topline (basically what you sing along with, the lyrics and melody). Lyrics have a natural rhythm to them, which aids tremendously in serving a melody.
Hitmaking juggernaut Ester Dean uses the same approach when she writes her songs:

Yes
Kanye does this but he doesn’t add words.
It was fine pre Yeezus when he filled it in but since Yeezus/Lift Off he thinks it’s okay to just leave the mumbles
Sometimes I see what he’s going for but most of the time it sucks
i need to start doing this more, really organic way to make a song instead of getting caught up with the production if you were to write it.
This is how I write when writing for others but dont really write this way myself as often

Kinda hard for me to write this way, I want do it more but it's sometimes trouble trying to fill in the words
Tech N9ne does this
Idk how else to find flows than to start doing that. Then I usually get more coherent from there
This is how I learned how to draw, you do a gesture drawing very loosely, as lightly as possible to get the movement and feeling. Then you build on it with anatomy, drapery, rendering and add your darks last. You dont draw every detail, only the details that guide the eye rhythmically throughout the piece. All forms of art are connected and this reminds me of creating a gesture for a song.
Very valid technique. However I honestly think it might be overused/overrated today. It may lead to “natural” melodies, but it can also lead to boring or generic ones imo unless you’re super talented off top
Me personally I find that it kind of keeps me too much in my comfort zone vocally. sometimes it works for an idea but other times I feel like the energy isn’t intentional enough or it’s like autopilot. Writing with an instrument feels more freeing for me as I’m not just falling back on things my voice would normally do
I didn’t have to write a lovesong baby
For you baby
I should've let go of the word but I say it
Everyday I
Try to find the way to your heart
When it’s never enough
Oh baby can’t you see
We’re dancing in the dark now
Isn't it a shame that a lovesong baby
For you baby
Could really tell the truth
