Hey you all
Wrote a post about the relationship between rap and the streets and why the two are hard to separate
funnything.substack.com/p/why-hip-hop-and-the-streets-are-so?s=w
Spent a bit of time around this stuff if you remember from my prior post
Been in here before ktt2.com/hey-ive-written-for-blackish-the-simpsons-im-giving-32508658
Music manager Wendy Day says it costs $150,000 to break a rap artist. Others say the cost is even higher. There’s studio time, music videos, promotion, mixing and mastering, and touring. There’s also the opportunity cost of making music. Every second you spend writing and recording music, promoting music, and shooting music videos is a second you could be spending working.
The most famous example of the cost of pursuing music coincidentally involves Young Thug. After Lil Baby got out of prison, Lil Baby went right back to selling d****. Young Thug was such a believer in Lil Baby that Thug paid Baby to stay out of the streets and spend time in the studio so Baby wouldn’t go back to prison. This was not a small amount of money. Thug would ask Lil Baby how much Lil Baby expected to make in a day on the streets, and Baby would respond $7k or $10k, and Thug would pay Baby that much to go to the studio instead.
For someone from a different background, the person sponsoring your career might be your parents or rich uncle. For rappers, the sponsor is often the streets.
It’s a decent post
Crazy that a former TV writer is shilling his stuff here though
@op I agree with everything you say. I think for Rap to complete get away from the streets, they gonna have to kill off the Gangsta Rap image and sound. Best chances that they'll probably never happen anytime soon, but if it does happen, I wonder how Rap will market themselves to the mainstream level.
B**** u smoking crack if you really think you gone get dat Alexander Hamilton™

im probably related to dude i guess i already got that alexander hamilton
Young thug was ordering hits on other rappers in jail doe.... I don't think its as simple as just having people to protect him/using money from streets to fund rap

I still write for some things. Not really shilling since it's a free post and a free substack. Just saw some of the discourse on here and thought it would resonate
Imagining Diddy gone from 2000 to 2014 is pretty wow
to be fair, it was a state case, so he would have likely come home after 1/3rd to 1/2 the time. Still pretty crazy tho
Because a lot of rappers come from gangs/"streets" or have some kind of connect & a lot of gangs n especially old respected leaders put up money for artists & labels & eventually they became the labels. So even if youre not part of gangs yourself or even that life, you will meet those that are.
Not hard to understand & its been going on since the 80s.
Its a genre mainly about and by people revolving around low class issues & street + d*** life that pops up in those low class issues.
People that are surprised this misfortune exists by a genre that talks about & revolves around this kind of misfortune, are just simply stupid.
But also, these problems & connects wouldnt happen or be this bad if the low class situation wasnt this bad, in America.
It is what it is & niggas just talking about what they experience, shouldnt be surprised those same niggas are involved.
That’s literally we’re rap is from, that’s all there is too. It ain’t ever going to leave it behind. What needs to be done is improve these communities instead of blaming them for everything

The whole surprise point is crazy, like how are KTT all over thug and how amazing he is, and then act all surprise with them Rico charges and saying he deserve it. Like how are driving around loving the music that talks about it and then turn around and be like lock him up, s*** makes no sense
Same as the whole MAGA phase this site was on, on some weird s***. Like hip hop got a whole message and meaning behind it that y’all don’t even stand on, s*** makes no sense

Agreed.
Some niggas really do look at it as just entertainment.
You dont have to condone what they done, but you shouldnt be surprised & should understand why a situation like that can occur.
People that arent familiar with Rap nor have any connect tot he actual issues taloed about in Rap are always the main ones confused or take s*** out of context.
Makes me even angrier when some juggas ay "why are they talking about his kind of stuff???" Like bro what? Youre surprised at people talking about misfortune in a genre built on that misfortune that are from that misfortune. Like wtf lol.
