the stories are all pretty self contained, so you could just skip to them if you really want to. i'd still recommend playing 4 & 5 because they're both great and have some of the better stories in the series (they also introduce some pretty significant characters that are more of a staple in the series going forward). the remaster helped them a good deal, but if you want to just skip to the more current games, i wouldn't blame you.
