There's really nothing to back this. Trump was terrible in the 2016 debates. He was polled as losing all 3 major debates. And everytime they asked on the fence voters to rate him he got low scores. His base was already 99% mobilised.

He's only got worse at public speaking, critical thinking and self-filtering since then.

Just in the last few months alone it was evident how shambolic Trump is at public speaking. Day after day of briefings he provided unprompted errors. To the extent they finally stopped him from appearing altogether.

Biden would be going into debates with a ton of fresh, current ammunition. Trump's only real talking points that he defers to on Biden are either fictional or historical or Obama.

Trump's camp undoubtedly want these debates to happen less. The whole point being that debates are likely to spike interest in a certain issue(s) that otherwise have gone unnoticed to sectors of the public. Of which there are no shortage that Biden could draw attention to.
