it’s kinda hard to honestly see a non black rapper for me to say is one of the greatest of their generation or one of the greatest ever especially with the new breed

None of the rappers you named were being considered for the equivalent of their generations big 3

Most of them didn’t even stay relevant past an album or two (aside from beastie boys)

I think it’s pretty clear Jack ain’t going no where and Yeat will probably have staying power as well

Not saying white rap never existed before now obviously ijs that there has been a shift and the culture takes them A LOT more seriously than they used to

i sincerely doubt most "rap fans" are seriously putting Yeat and Jack Harlow as top 3 rappers this generation. I enjoy music from the both of them too, but there's a lot more great rappers out there, most of the ones i would consider top 5-10 this generation are black. The conversation around Yeat & Jack (especially Jack) is more general music fans and pop leaning than the people we would call hip-hop heads. Rap music is just bigger than ever today so it draws in a more general audience

  • Yeah, hip hop has been stretched and chopped into such a wildly diverse group of genres that it’s almost more accurate to describe it as a historically, but formerly black American genre that has transformed into a global collection of music. 15 years from now it’ll be like rock being a black genre: undeniably true, but in terms of cultural visibility not a meaningful distinction. Whites already dominate behind the boards and in the boardrooms, at this point I almost wonder if the lack of white rappers is simply due to there not being enough time to market white artists who genuinely grew up in the midst of hip hop and do it convincingly (there’s like seven white rappers atp who do this). But I’m 23 now and I feel like ever since Wayne and Kanye (I’m thinking to when I was around 8-11 years old) whites have felt “at home” in the genre and there just needs to be a bit of time to see them come around (I’m aware that there’s been white hip hop fans since the run dmc days and then especially the nwa days, but I still think the vibe shift occurred in the Wayne/Kanye period and the shockwaves just haven’t been felt due to time).

sounds weird to say but the black hold on the culture is gonna be challenged by hispanics and indians n s***. new forms of music.

Regardless of race Yeat is the premiere undeground rapper of the 2020s thus.

Who from that scene has done it better than him?

    SoFaygo? Destroy Lonely? Summrs? Carson?
