“I don’t want to be a country musician. Everyone calls me it. I want to be a songwriter, and you’re quintessentially a songwriter,” he said. “No one calls Bruce Springsteen — hate to use your name in front of you — but no one calls Bruce Springsteen a freaking rock musician, which you are one, but you’re also an indie musician, you’re also a country musician. You’re all these things encapsulated in one man. And that’s what songwriting is.”
Plenty of people call Bruce a Rock artist but I feel him
He would make good pop songs and is a great writer
Is this like when people say they don’t wanna be considered rappers but they rap?
pretty much, i respect it

Bruce has been considered rock music since Born to Run
I feel like he does touch on other genres also
like he's primarily country still but I hear a lot of blues, bluegrass, alternative stuff from him too
more Springsteen than Travis Tritt basically lol
Would love to see a legit blues album by him
I hate when artists do this s***
I don't really get why they complain about it too much
Like even if people attach certain labels to them they can still make whatever music they want to basically
And then if the music stopped fitting the label applied to them the label would change
I don't get why it's something to be mad about

Man I had the same thought when I saw the title lol

Like actions speak louder than words for this type of thing
You hav like 6 country albums dude
People r always gonna categorize things
I might have to give this guy a listen
His self titled album is great
His self titled album is great
He does write nice songs but he seems like a real knucklehead sometimes
A silly billy

I think his label deal is up after Bar Scene so we'll see what he dips into once he's independent again but yeah lol I don't personally see him as a country artist in the same way as a Morgan Wallen or whoever the f*** but his music while having other elements in it is definitely heavy on the country aspect

I don't really see Morgan wallen as pure country though
To me I would apply that label moreso to Zach than Morgan wallen
Like Morgan wallen is country pop/bro country and Zach Bryan is more traditional country to me
Maybe that's why he doesn't like the label
Because a lot of the popular country right now sucks butt

you're prly right lol tbf I don't listen to Morgan and barely listen to country outside of Zach, some Jelly Roll, etc. I'm more into bluegrass and folk but the straight up more generic country stuff I can't get into

I'm also not a country expert
@RVI probably has interesting thoughts on this ..

At this point it feels like something artists think they have to think about themselves if they’re ‘artsy’ in their field in any way
make good music then
Wait - isn’t Taylor Swift proof that he simply isn’t doing something enough to be called a songwriter? She was face of country for almost a decade and has always been hailed with the songwriter title, and she straight up embraced being considered country
Hell THE COUNTRY COMMUNITY often shunned her as being not country enough, and she still said f*** y’all I’m country - and was still called a songwriter
