I think they saw a older man and thought it would be a easy lick

    fair enough

to me the issue isnt "how much did racism play a role in this" bc thats hard to falsify in this situation

the broader issue is that you cant even say hes asian without it turning into some "why do you have to make it about race" bs, as if the narrative that asian people are weaker/non-masculine/etc doesnt play an obvious role in the spike in hate crimes

  • Apr 6, 2021

F*** them lil niggas they could throw the book at em for all I care

But also yeah the victim is Asian, but we all know deep down in our hearts that the media never refers to brown people as Asian, especially not in the United States so we should stop pretending they do itt !

this is part of why context matters for phrases. someone racist would use that idea in the context of all offenses committed upon a minority because they're trying to diminish the possibility that people will interpret the event in a race-related way. they don't want those details (as in, they want the headline to read "man kills another man in carjacking incident") because the lack of information allows them to more convincingly say to themselves and others "there's no racism towards blacks! that's just a man who killed another man."

this is different. ppl aren't saying the race reference should be removed entirely (and no one itt is saying "you can't point out that asian people were victims", imo). they're saying that "Asian" is a technically-right-but-not-really descriptor for the guy -- not in terms of literalness, but in terms of how america in general sees "Asian" as. for ex, of course there are people who regularly think of indian people as asian, but a lot more don't, and that's bc a lot more people in america aren't familiar with india or asia than are. they see asian as chinese/japanese/korean

and news people know this. but news people are also marketers and they know that anti-asian sentiment is a hot topic rn. so what these ppl are arguing is that this twitter guy is stretching the descriptor "Asian" past the public idea of "Asian" and is using its more technical description to justify itself, even though the victim doesn't look like what most people reading the article would initially expect him to. so why would the guy write a headline that makes it harder for people to understand the situation? because anti-Asian is a hot topic rn

    my confusion is this

    1. why is it being assumed that the anti-asian sentiment has not also affected south asians? there have literally been spikes in hate crimes against that demographic recently as well, for a number of reasons

    2. would it be okay if the post said "indian man" or something to that effect? is this purely just an issue of semantics?

and to me a hate crime against an indian person WOULD be relevant to the broader issue of racism against asian people, for a couple reasons. not only what I stated above but also because there are historical interdependencies between asian demographics and their experiences in America that many people are just ignorant about

    1. south asian =/= just pakistanis

    2. its more complicated than that and I am not obligated to or interested in proving the existence of a racist narrative to you.

you dont know more about asian experiences in america than we do

im out of here lol I'm not doing this tonight

But the thing is this isn't a hate crime it was just a crime. Hence why the race aspect is so unnecessary especially using the race identifier of "asian" when the term isn't used to identify south asians often in america

what is the criteria for when something has to do with someone being asian? do you not think race/ethnicity affects how vulnerable some kids think a person is?

again, has nothing to do with the anti-black media narrative which I oppose. and I'm posing this to you genuinely

i’m not talking about anti black media.

i’m saying that that current rise in hate crimes against Asians has clearly been toward East Asians and SEA.

This is mainly due to corona and so people have been attacking those who are Chinese or “look Chinese”.

These girls, like most Americans would likely see him as: Muslim or Indian.

Many people think Asian they think China, Japan & Korea which is obviously wrong.

When Sikh people were getting attacked no one said stop Asian hate crimes they said stop Muslim hate crimes despite many brown people not even being Muslim.
