A lot of those toss up states have gone to the GOP in recent elections though. The inherent electoral college advantage for Trump is huge.

Without toss up states, if polling is right Biden is already at 260 and Trump in the 100s.

I'd love for this to be true, but I'm old enough to remember when people were saying the exact same thing after Obama won in 08.
Fact of the matter is that the percentage of people that can vote who DO vote is very low in the US. And GOP voters usually have a very reliable strong turnout. So that will keep them around unless Dems can turn out candidates and policies that consistently excite people.

And I totally get what you're saying about how Trump NEEDS to win a lot more states than Biden. I'm just saying that my prior is that Trump is the favorite entering this election in almost all of those toss up states. And therefore Biden needs the economy/pandemic stuff to continue to be negative in order to have the advantage in a couple of them.

State polling is solid for Biden now in enough toss up states that if the election were held today he'd definitely win. But at the same time, it's also close enough to the point where poor debate performances, good news on economy, or pandemic could shift things quickly in many of those toss ups.
