Niggas let Kim Gordon and that Mid ass blade album go top 10 I cannot do this no more lmfao
kim gordon was pretty good.
I'm probably just becoming older. (washed)
Highlight for me personally was The Drake - Kendrick Beef. Felt like a true moment in music history. And 'Brat' tapped into the gen z zeitgeist on aesthetics and tiktok alone.
But in terms of albums or young artists who are holding up the standard - I'm just not hearing it. Like who's next, who's defining the 2020s? (S/o Mk.Gee - him & dijon have massive crossover potential.)
I think you are looking too much towards the future and not even acknowledging the present.
Like we could both get hit by a car stepping off the curb, whilst pontificating about the future of the music industry. You are looking toward a future that may or may not exist.
This may be my most reactionary area but who gives a s*** about the future of "music" if I have plenty of fire dropping today?
If I posted 25 albums you probably haven't heard many of, would you click play on 15 of them to see what 2024 music was all about or would you just go on with your preconceived notions of whats "good" or whatever?

LP not being on any of these list is a crime do none of them fw nu metal or what

Maybe the new reformation sucks. I honestly never gave it a chance due to the chick being a scientologist Danny Masterson supporter.
What I will say is their last releases with Chester were subpar and they were sounding kinda washed
I'm actually gonna give it a spin today
thoughts??
Gigi by skaiwater is hard tho
thoughts??
My thoughts are pitchfork is more washed than Linkin Park
Wall of Eyes got BNM and a pretty high score from Pitchfork and isn't included in the top 50 albums of the year?

The new record is p good of a comeback and it's a bit return to their older sound compared to the last record with Chester. I feel like if not for the album atleast one of the singles should've been among a top 100/50 songs of the year list
You should give it a try imo.

Listening now. Its about what I expected. Nothing too groundbreaking on there.
I loved when they got in their experimental bag in between songs
I heard one heavy joint on there about midway thru that was kinda banging
@provider lets say hypothetically I did my year end list last night, you think it would be best in the new releases thread or what?

Sucks that the corpos lists spark so much more engagement (whether good or bad)
thoughts??
I would ask to be directed to the time period where Pitchfork was any heavier in their hip hop coverage than they are now. Cause they might be and I just don't know.
I just did a little experiment though. Last year their highest hip hop records were billy woods and Noname. In 2022 its Kendrick, Earl, billy woods. And throughout both lists there's probably the same amount of hip hop. Even went back to 2014, RTJ at the top and then 5 or 6 other selections out of 50. Just like the other years I mentioned.
So idk. Maybe they just liked the "fried internet s***" more in 2024.

Nah I'm hoping people just waiting for the year to actually end
Not to mention people make their own threads, there's definitely multiple at this point lol
thoughts??
That's what happens when you have edge lords like Alphonse being one of your lead hip hop reviewers.

Think looking towards the future is possible while still enjoying the present. I listen to new music continuously. I just notice a decline in quality. And more so because of how we consume music and how that correlates with the forced longevity of our current stars.
We are losing the art of the album. I'm seeing a focus on content instead of art. The new generation engages with playlists, tiktok versions and see the artist in a celebrity context. Again this is not saying that there aren't good albums out, it's that making good albums is not the norm anymore.

Props on the well thought out post.
I do agree that the "mainstream" or maybe I could say the majority? of kids act that way due to the microwave nature of social media and content during the smart phone generation. Attention spans are at an all time low. Celebrity worship and stan culture is at an all time high. I've talked to 20 somethings at work that don't even listen to albums at all. Its so sad.
But there are definitely authentic artists that love creating, around every turn. You just have to be willing to look a little harder for it sometimes. I push anybody I talk to listen to albums in full. Some people still turn into music geeks. Art will live on I think.
