one of my earliest memory of hip hop is watching this music program where they'd ask random people on the street to recognize famous musicians, actors, etc. one of those famous people was Tupac. I remember knowing him and his 'story' from an incredibly young age without even listening to the music properly. but still somehow I just knew it was him whenever a track would come in. I think that my first-ever rap album proper was 50 cent's discography on 2 cds. there would be a ton of mixtapes on there and my dad would play them in his car. not that he was even into rap like that in his 40s, but I do remember us almost bonding over 50 even tho we would never go super deep into that. my schoolmates would be head over heels for 50 and game and Eminem of course; there would be a small shop selling durags and fake g unit clothes and f***ing chains and we'd spend so much time there for my generation this was the first time there was an aesthetic so strong coming from a musician and the genre. games such as gta san andreas and getting up would only contribute to that further
OP tagged me in this thread a while ago but I couldn't get around to writing anything here. as I tried to I had to start over multiple times and draft multiple things out because I realize now that my memories are a huge mess when it comes to hip hop. for me this is like trying to describe and contextualize your entire life event by event. I would do everything with hip hop in the background over the years. I would dive in and out of the genre musically, I would learn about the history and read all types of things about people who made it, I would participate and live hip hop with my friends and strangers, id laugh and cry and get into trouble over it. at this point I dont think theres one recognizable enough hip hop project that I aint listened to
it is an omnipresent fact of life for me and a lot of people all over the world, and I'm truly glad that it is
this and Babylon sherm, well written posts. I love reading stuff like this with substance.
my 1st memory listening to hip hop was gangster's paradise thanks to dangerous minds. I never listened to 2pac's music when he was alive, I think the 1st time I experienced his music was changes music video on tv.
50 cent's early mixtape run, wanksta, 8 mile OST features, and eventually his official debut album...greatest hip hop run ever imo. it was such a special time, everyone was rocking g-unit.
I had so many phases over the years, was trying to get my hands on all the mixtapes from clue, funk flex etc. I can go on and on about what hip hop has done for me, still listen to it daily. love it
oh no its good stuff brother, I appreciate it I really didnt know which angle to take here so I figured random memories will do just fine
some other things I remembered just now: learning about dead prez's hip hop through 50 sampling it for his (apparently) Diddy diss. once again I was super young but loved the sample. amazing song and I loved it forever. I still pick out random 50 joints from my head trying to find it on YouTube and those will be songs with 2k views and whatnot lol
one other memory is me being at a hospital when I was 12 with this older guy. he was friends with at the time unknown rapper who blew the F*** up in my area and is now doing tours around the country and everything. but the reason I remembered that is bc this guy gave me a cd with some music and there were two songs that I would listen to non f***ing stop. song names? Ms Jackson and Shook Ones pt. 2 of course
You were deep in those 50 tapes
Guess Whos Back - First tape after infamous shooting the raw energy here is incredible
50 Cent Is The Future - Classic tape, introduces Lloyd Banks n Tony Yayo who are both hungry af
No Mercy No Fear - Just signed to em, momentum building, knows this is gonna work, considered a classic along with 50citf
Gods Plan - completes the trilogy of og unit tapes not a classic but still very good
G Unit Radio - theres 25 of these that docs different moments along his run, kinda trash for the most part 15 onwards (except for 22 which is fire) personal favourites: 3,5,8(if u like Game),10,14,22
Return of the Bodysnatchers - Really underrated mixtape, nice production, was the start of a post G unit Radio "ThisIs50" series which only had 2 follow ups (mid) but this 1 was it
For some underrated past prime 50 check War Angel (2009) and modern 50 on Kanan Tape (2015).
Reminded me of one of my favorite posts on this site

Also @WRU so much of your hip hop journey being through word of mouth and chance is really interesting to me
I think about accessibility and movement a lot, usually within resources and movement within urban spaces
But btwn some of your posts and another post itt where someone was speak to how much it impacted them to be able to hear the music by buying tapes out of trunks, word of mouth etc it's got me thinking about a different set of questions than I usually do when it comes to accessibility
But I guess that's a conversation that shows up with anything tied to culture
two amazing rap albums from the 70s and 80s. one is an acquired taste and probably more of a proto rap album, the other is a massive inspiration for DOOM and you'll hear a ton of samples and quotes from it in his music. just wanted to highlight these since I heard them for the first time recently and its a good time to shine some light on the classics

Literally can just pick songs at random and it's a very high chance they'll be fireb
Ngl for a while I was on some “real” hip hop s*** (not that rap god type s*** lol) from the time g unit was really falling off popularity wise until the time I discovered chief keef. Him being from Chicago and us being in the same age group I wanted him to win. His music was raw and you could hear that hunger in him. He wasn’t lyrical but his sound made up for it. Even after Finally Rich he continued to impress me and he’s one of the goats to me. I love how he put on a generation of other Chicago rappers and now there’s a new generation able to eat because of the foot work him and his peers did over a decade ago.
Thank you for this
Being from and in Chicago for Keef's rise must have been so crazy, glad you got to live that
Blows my mind every time I think about his career as a whole esp considering how young he still is
Yeah sorry meant to get back to you was just on vacation then getting back into the swing of work. Will respond this weekend.
Damn, this the second or third time someone's hit me back on something I thought they forgot about like this
