So then the argument would shift to “808s paved the way for Drake to be successful”

But that’s not the same as influence, and a lot of people online have claimed influence

    Well I mean,

808's clearly influenced him. So that much I don't think is up for debate

Is it exaggerated? Yeah and no.

Yeah because niggas act like Drake wouldn't be rapping and singing and what not if Ye didn't drop 808's which is IMO laughable.

No because who the public came to know Drake as, derived pretty heavily from SFG which 100% has quite a bit of elements from 808's and while he was undoubtedly influenced by other things, it was 808's that made him confident to make Lust for Life his intro, take chances like Let's Call it Off / A Little Bit, Unstoppable, etc. and even make an album cover like SFG.

So I mean, 808's influence on Drake's career may be exaggerated depending on who you ask, but the influence is 100% there and clear.

"I originally made the beat for @champagnepapi but he aint take it. These were SoFarGone times and @ovo40 asked me to make some moody s*** like 808 and heartbreaks. Which i hated at the time."

"Say What's Real" helped me find a place that I really wanted Drake to sit, sonically."

""I was like, 'Yo, f*** it, that s*** crazy,' and I ran with that sound.”"

"I can't even be mad at him", says 40. Because the last cd I listened to before I started working on so far gone was 808's and heartbreak"

"We always, always, always took the time to listen to Kanye's music and appreciate it beyond. We searched the samples and we find out where his inspiration came from"

    they dont like this 1!

    Sure, on So far gone

But Drake’s career isn’t just so far gone

And the amount of hits he’s put out over a span of more than a decade, can’t be boiled down to 808s influence, at least musically.

Drake’s success may have been jumpstarted by 808s sound, but to maintain that success he didn’t depend on it

Noah “40” Shebib tells VIBE in the Aug/Sept. issue that Ye cursed him out for “borrowing” his sound.

“I CAN’T EVEN BE MAD AT HIM,” SAYS 40 [SHORT FOR WORKING 40 DAYS AND 40 NIGHTS…NOAH’S ARK, GET IT?) “BECAUSE THE LAST CD I LISTENED TO BEFORE I STARTED WORKING ON SO FAR GONE WAS 808S & HEARTBREAK.”

    Who's maintaining that?

He's not even remotely the same artist that he was in 09'

I thought this was about 808's influence on SFG / the start of drake's career.

How can you say that when Kanye literally gave Drake the Find Your Love beat and wrote the song for Drake, that song is an 808s song

and clearly Drake turned it into something of his own that he then influenced even more artists with

Don't get this fight at all. Its not saying Drake isn't doing his own thing still

a lotta misunderstanding about what influence means and how it takes shape in music. S*** does not always mean the end product literally sounds like what its being influenced by

GQ: What about "Lust for Life"?

Noah "40" Shebib: It came a little bit later when we were figuring out the direction of the album. When it started to take shape, this song just slipped into the mold. Kanye had put out that record at the time, anyway, he sampled "Tears for Fears" in it and there was this melody and Drake became crazily obsessed with this melody. "Coldest Winter!"

literally came ITT to say this. Without The Hurting Tears For Fears album you don’t get 808s, Drake or The Weeknd

I agree. If a classic album influenced Drake he would probably have made one by now. Maybe the singles from it influenced him though.

808s didn’t invent singing and rapping, Lauryn Hill, Andre 3000 and Bone Thugs already did it before

Drake’s singing isn’t influenced by 808s, it’s influenced by Classic R&B (sometimes pop, but rarely), when Drake makes songs like Hold on we’re going home or Jungle, he isn’t trying to imitate or replicate 808s

The only sign of 808s having anything to do with Drake’s success is from a few select songs on So Far Gone

808s is incredibly influential for many artists in modern day Hip Hop, but to act like Drake wouldn’t have a career without it is absurd.

Kanye 100% had an influence on Drake, but it mostly came from College Dropout, Late Registration and Graduation, not 808s. And while he was influenced by Kanye, he was also influenced by Jay-Z, Joe Budden, Phonte and Wayne.

Grad was his fav Ye album
