Folk horror is a real thing and it’s been around for decades, but it’s certainly not this movie

Wow Don’t feel this way about movies often but this was Very unnerving n had me baffled at the obscene imagery that plagued the screen in the second half . It was Visually stunning as expected , first quarter was basically just “look at these shots!!” But picked up immediately when the townspeople were introduced. handled the subject matter really well and I never felt like I needed to think too hard about what exactly what was going on . Even after the movie I felt like I loosely understood the overall vision behind it.
Few genuine scares here and there but what really got me by surprise was how anxiety inducing it was . This is definitely a very different movie imo from what we’ve seen from the director so far and I’m all for this direction.

Some thoughts :
Movie was unintentionally funny at times n I I loved every second

Initially I thought the friend was gonna play a similar role to the friend in get out but I’m really glad they handled her character the way they did

the “look at these shots” scenes in the first act was some of my favorite parts of the movie. I can understand this film not being somebody’s thing but people saying it’s boring is crazy to me

dog when the child was telling the priest to f\*\*\* off i was dead

When the child had the mask on the dead crow, somebody in the theater yelled “IS HE F\*\*\*IN THE CROW?” And the whole theater burst into laughter

This was okay, very surface level with all the themes, which comprise most of the film

Very well made though, nice and lean movie

On this film in particular, he should have gone all in on it being a genre film rather than trying to do babies first arthouse. The climax of the film is a cheap knockoff of Society (1989) imo.

In general though he's a director with a good sense of aesthetics but genuinely nothing else to offer

It was pretty small bore but some of the body horror is great.

Also, it's definitely folk horror. It's just not pagan. It's abrahamic.

The genre stuff was the boring part. Film was a lot more entertaining as a Cronenberg than a Straw Dogs.

Imma have to sit on this for a day

I wanted more horror and comedy, less drama and metaphor
