I've never heard anyone say this was a no skip album until this thread popped up
That doesn't seem to be the general consensus. When people talk about 2000s classic R&B album, I almost never see this albums come up. Not a diss, just saying, if you restrict it to genre and barely anyone brings it up, that Thriller comment is thrown out the window
And I don't mean music lovers, I mean the gp. Not many people bring this album up in those types of conversations

So because it's not spoken about ad nauseum, it cant be a great album?

or just say it was a great album by itself
the fact that you have to compare it to Thriller shows it's nowhere near it's level as that album is the standard
I feel you,it’s a very unique R&B album that still influences people till this day,I’ll say that.

her music was ahead of its time
why won't he release her music to streaming?
Did they have some type of falling out before her death? If so, he's a petty and disrespectful piece of s***
And yet, paradoxically to its significance, the legacy of Aaliyah is now diminished by its absence from streaming services. After her death, Blackground Records, run by her uncle and cousin, faced some operational and legal issues. The label’s domain name has lapsed, and a final release promised by an associated publishing company has not materialized. There have been a couple of false starts—a posthumous album helmed, and then abandoned, by Drake and 40; an unsanctioned greatest hits release; the sale of her catalog to a publishing company—but most of Aaliyah’s catalog has remained unavailable to stream or download. Age Ain’t Nothing But A Number, the album written and produced by her abuser, is the only accessible release. For many artists, this could mean being written out of history, forgotten to more convenient nostalgia. For Aaliyah, it means something rarer—a legacy defined not by industry profiteers and hologram start-ups but by friends, fans, and kindred artists.
her music was ahead of its time
It’s not even just the music, her whole aesthetic hasn’t been caught up with yet. She was very futuristic but without the dystopian bs people like to envision in the future. Her vision was very beautiful and no one has replicated it sense.

when did I say it wasn't a great album?
I'm just wondering how someone can compare this to Thriller when Thriller is the standard to every album after it. We've seen blockbuster albums called the "Thriller of this generation" and even regular people talking about the greatness of that album.
Self-titled has never come anywhere close to that type of impact. It has impact and influence, but to use it as the standard to R&B albums after it? Nah, doesn't happen

“ Hankerson himself has yet to address the matter, and it’s hard to tell if he ever will, as he has never really done much talking to the press.”
maybe he just doesn’t want to. He might not see it the same way we do. He may see it as honoring her death who knows

Idk. I hope not, even tho that sounds realistic

What a strange and mysterious old man.

I respect his decision and hate at the same time
Aaliyah is my favorite female artist of all time. It’s such a shame her music isn’t on DSP
