Not only that, but their curriculum needs to be taken down and destroyed

Schools should not force students to take gen ed classes of any kind. And they should be able to start taking classes towards their major of field of study from day 1. If you want to go to med school start prepping for that, and it should only be 2 years Max of undergrad not 4.

American universities are some of the biggest thieves on the planet. The amount of money they steal from families for the most useless mind numbing s*** is absurd.

also agreed. gen ed classes are largely bullshit. but with free college it wouldnt be much of a problem anyway

    Synopsis

8 hours is def too long, same as how its too long of a work day

Nah, people need structure. Schooling as it stands is just too rigid and monotonous.

this i don't agree with. university is a time for intellectual exploration. the idea of gen ed classes is good, maybe it needs some tweaking, but i don't think tying students to just focus on their major, field of study, whatever is as good as it might sound.

    how does this work?

It doesn’t. Even if we cut our military spending significantly, we wouldn’t be able to afford open admission into every university AND free tuition, room and board, no country in history can or has achieved this. The only way it could work like that is if the coursework was dramatically increased to weed out the majority of students who got in

There will always be a group of people who need to work jobs that don’t require a college education, what we need to do as a society is make sure these jobs get decent and livable wages

The reality is that many/most people aren’t cut out for higher education, and this non-competitive, open admission fairytale scenario would just be a massive resource pit.

The reality is also that many people can’t and will never pull their weight in k-12 either, so idiotic ideas like the whole class taking the test together benefits no one

Right. And to clarify, I fully support free education, but this noncompetitive aspect is just nonsense. It should be free for people who earn a place there.

In my calculus class, like 80% of us were cheating off like three kids who actually knew the answers. In one of my biology classes like half the class was just copying my answers. Now imagine how rampant the non learning for people who don’t understand would be if the school actually sanctioned cooperation like that. I’m not saying students shouldn’t work in groups, they already do. I’m just saying that when a group of students work together there’s always a part of that group that actually knows what they’re doing and another part that doesn’t and either pretends to and wings it, or just unapologetically copies the work. There needs to be at least some measure of individual work, even if it’s within the same paper or project

wow I actually agree for the most part although I wouldn’t blame capitalism per say, or say it needs to be abolished. just reformed

it’s just what school needed to be in the past vs what it needs to be now is different and desperately needs an update

back in the day school was harsh because society was harsh. now that we have it relatively easier we need to reform schools to better suit the modern era

Yeah that s*** is f***ing lame.

I didn’t finish my degree because I was putting myself through college w/ no help while working full time.

But I wanted a degree in computer science...don’t see why I’m forced to take a bunch of unrelated classes and THEN pre-req classes just to take certain classes....

Complete waste of time and money for people who cannot afford it, yet this country sells the idea that college is almost a requirement to succeed in life

  • Jul 11, 2020

I don’t agree with you often @Synopsis but I agree With you here. Our education system was built in the age of factories and this builds students to be good “factory type” workers later in life. We need to adjust the system to better reflect the current landscape of the workforce we have today.

Also I really liked your point on how some kids are meant to feel bad because they can’t manage the good grades that some other students can, which ofc is not their fault at all.
