might be a hot take but i think milesâ first half home story of wanting to come out to his parents to spider-man is just a bit boring compared to the second half of his place in the spiderverse and if he can control his fate in time
it just feels a bit been there done that especially since itâs happening twice in the movie with him and gwen with pretty much the same not subtle allegory and idkk maybe i was just impatient and wanted to get to the crazy stuff
I felt the same on first watch and was getting pissed off at the pacing but on second watch I was able to relax and take it all in and I f***in love the first half.
Itâs essentially a miles morales solo movie + raimi Spider-Man 2 vibes and the vibes of him just chillin with Gwen are crazyyy. And the stuff with his parents sets up the whole rest of the movie/the next one so well.
The romance between miles and Gwen was pretty terrible too ngl
The fact Gwen really just stood by and was cool with Miles whole world and family being erased while lying to him about everything she knew about him is shady af
Really hope they donât end up together cuz she fake af
Lowkey Gwen lost everyone like Peter and her dad already and finally found this new group of spider people, she essentially got taken into a damn CULT at the worst point in her life needed family and thought they were right about Miles. but she sees that she was wrong makes up with her dad and builds a team to help miles.
That being said I hope they never end up together and they setting up that avatar black girl as Miles love interest in the next movie.

Regardless though, she f***ed up and betrayed her one friend. I donât think Miles should ever forgive her. And itâs gonna be lame af because thatâs exactly what theyâll do rather than properly address how much of a POS she really was.
Tbh those 2 would be a better match. Hope that happens
I love it personally ... It's not rushed and melodramatic like most films where the love interests are infatuated with each other, for no reason, after just 15 minutes in the movie.
Gwen comes up as someone who has a hard time exteriorizing her feelings properly. I don't expect her to start being overly emotional and sentimental like that; and i think all spider-men have learned with time to put their feelings and ideals to the side in order to serve the greater good. They're just more pragmatic than your average human being.
But thatâs basically what it was⌠theyâre just infatuated with one another after spending like 5 minutes together in the movie. And when Miles realizes she played him all along, he ainât even mad at her and even apologizes? Like tf?
Terrible writing and handling of the characters
And I think it has less to do with âthe greater goodâ and moreso Gwen betraying her one friend for this cult

I agree wit the betrayal but breh they liked each other since the first movie, it wasnât just 5 minutes of this one. There was a whole film of buildup

The first movie leaves them as good friends at the end
This instantly goes from friendship to romance in like 5 mins lol

I think that type of character development is essential though. You gotta take your time and flesh out these characters in order for the audience to truly care about them
The last 10 minutes of the film wouldnât have hit nearly as hard if we hadnât spent the first half of the film with Miles and his family
The first movie leaves them as good friends at the end

Idk, they definitely were setting up a potential romance in the first film
Even if they ended the movie as just friends, the feelings were still felt in the movie

Iâd argue it hasnât even hit romance yet, theyâre still good friends that have had feelings for each other but havenât made it clear yet
Lowkey the one of the vibiest points in a relationship
Itâs not like they kissed or even held hands in this movie

Maybe not but itâs clear they know at this point that they got feelings for one another
Only reason they donât act on it is cuz Gwen know she a big ass liar and being shady af

There is definitely a build up to their romance that is more slow and organic than most movie love stories.
I mean even in the first movie they spent a lot of time together just for Miles to end up being friendzoned in the end, and in this one we get to know why Gwen is so reluctant to be with Miles because like she said : In all dimensions the Spider-man/Gwen relationship end up very badly and she wasn't lying.
In her world Peter Parker ends up dying after being close to her, even in the amazing spider-man movies and in the comics Gwen ends up dying after being with spider-man. It seems like it's destiny for one of them to die after being together. It kinda makes sense why Gwen isn't all over Miles when you know all that, she's trying her best to not fall in love with him to avoid this fate. And i don't think Miles has forgiven Gwen, he's still mad at her, he has just more important things to deal with now.
For me their love story is pretty well written but i guess we have to agree to disagree

It makes sense for her to believe in that being her fate because of her association with Miguel and his team for the time being since she left her universe. Now that she sees Miles point of view that fate can be changed with her dad quitting the police force, she can be with Miles without that fear beforehand. I agree itâs handled extremely well and the seeds had been planted since the start.
First watch had subtitles and i didnt realise how much i relied on them until i did the second watch tonight without them. A shame for people who probably didnt hear the amazing one liners from Hobie
The first movie leaves them as good friends at the end

Rewatch the first movie dawg, there a clear subtext of adolescent romance. Itâs clear as day bro

Completely agree
Iâm very curious what they have Gwen do to redeem herself in the eyes of Miles. Idk what direction they taking it

A better example of friendship to romance in 5 seconds with no buildup is the Tom holland movies
First movie MJ is the weird loner girl they donât even pay attention to,
Far From Home starts and suddenly itâs this manâs mission to become her boyfriend?
Completely agree

They prob think her coming with her team to help him will be enough
Honestly there ainât anything she can do to redeem herself. She betrayed him. Ainât no coming back from that
But modern writing always depicts men as being okay with any bs from women

Never said the subtext ainât there but they still end that film as friends

Well, that would be the obvious and like you said disappointing way to do it. Iâm hoping for something more subversive.
You could say that Miles has more romantic feelings towards Gwen than Gwen has towards Miles and I would understand that. Since the first movie it's clear as day that Miles has a crush on Gwen. It's the reason why he has so many drawings of her in his notebook in Across the Spider-Verse. Bro has had it for her bad lol you can also probably tell that Gwen is at the very least interested in Miles, and at some points attracted to him, during the first movie.
When Gwen finds out that Miles does have strong feelings for her, she does seem to return those feelings once she understands that it's more than a friendship thing with him. She does seem interested romantically, but probably wants to keep it as just friends as a means to keep both of them safe. The whole "Every Spider-Man has a Gwen, and it doesn't end well for either of them" bit supports that.
