carti didnt drop for 5 years, we needed 20+ from him
op still (hopefully) right imo
A lot of people who pretended to agree with OP are in a thread celebrating 30 tracks from Carti. Very funny

the whole “long albums suck, short albums are great” argument falls apart when there’s a single bad song on a short album
you have 2 bad songs on a 10-song album, that’s 20% of the album being trash
you have 2 bad songs on a 25 song album, that’s only 8%
album length has no bearing on whether the music is good
if an artist can make 20+ good songs and its cohesive, that’s better than only being able to make 5 good songs and a few decent songs just to make it longer than EP length

Exactly. Not to mention albums do not need to be cohesive in order to be good or a classic - an argument many use when it comes to why they are so against long albums. Not all artists are suited to make cohesive albums and not all genres are suited for cohesive albums. It is entirely possible to craft a great, long album
GNX has Luther, TV Off and Not Like Us by proxy. $$$ has no songs you hear outside.

awful way to judge a body of work

hard disagree there
a certain level of cohesion is absolutely necessary for an album as a whole to be good or a classic
otherwise, you’re just listening to a glorified playlist
it takes more skill to craft a cohesive album with more songs on it than to craft a cohesive album with less
Weeknd with 22
Pnd and drake with 21
Carti with 30
Don’t be fooled this thread was absolutely not based on any real a***ysis just a way to say “Kendrick outsold Drake this week”

long tracklist gang wins again
can you really call yourself a music fan if you prefer getting LESS music??
music haters lost

The bad songs on short albums that would even be in this conversation always end up growing on you lol
Quality > quantity
quality is completely unrelated to quantity
if an artist is good at making music, they can make long albums that sound good
if an artist is bad at making music, they might try to hide the fact that they can only make 5 good songs a year by dropping a 10 song album every 2 years

It’s just a conversation about quality control. Every movie can be 3 or 4+ hours if they wanted them to be, but that’s simply overkill and that’s where the editing process comes in.
Does an album with a long tracklist inherently mean it will be bad? No. Does a short tracklist automatically mean an album is a classic? Also no.
But I think a longer tracklist increases the likelihood for underbaked or redundant songs to exist on the album than if there was a shorter tracklist

I agree that an album can be both but most of the time when an album is 20+ songs and over an hour it just has a lot of skips and hard to get through, even if 5-8 songs are great. And personally I'm an album listener so if I like 8/20 songs I'm way less likely to return to it than if I like 8/15 songs
you right...we doin 30+ now
Why stop at 30.. why not 300.. 3000.. these artists are thinking small

Also it’s about respect for the audience and the album as an artform.
Most people don’t have an hour and a half to spare every single day to listen to an album in its entirety.
By making your tracklist 20+ songs and 80-90+ minutes in length, you’re indirectly asking fans to choose their favorite songs and add them to their playlists rather than experience the entire album in the format it was intended to be experienced in.
I will always respect shorter tracklists more than longer ones because it’s an exercise in restraint and a challenge for the artist to put their best foot forward and use their jurisdiction to trim what they think is excess
