mainstream s*** has always been mostly about what bumps in the whip and makes us shake our hips what is this insane revisionist history denial is a river is a massive song and that s*** is literally a mf doom type beat
look at the #1 hits of every era its almost all dance songs party songs or someone dying
Ehh maybe majority were dance/party records but nah lol look at iconic songs from the 60's, 70s and 80s. Instrumental wise, sure--lyric wise no way. The top most popular artist used to make songs about literally everything. About growing pains, a hard day at work, working the fields, making changes to life, about being stalked, about beating up/overcoming bullies, about denying baby daddy allegations, growing up with abusive parents, believing in yourself, a beautiful day, father getting locked up for controversial invention, army dreamers sent do die in war, about dreams etc... All these topics I've touched on were anthemic hit singles, not just deep cuts on track 14 lol And I ain't even touch on rap with any of these topics.
80's and 90's rap you had Fight The Power, Brendas Got A Baby, Today Was A Good Day, Gimme The Loot, Keep Ya Head Up, Dear Mama, The Message, Freedom, F*** The Police etc... none of these songs mention ass or t*** or even have ass shaking beats--but they were all huge records. None of these songs go big today except maybe FTP. Mf's have dumbed down mainstream music so much now that anything that isn't about shaking ass is looked down upon and impossible to make work anymore.
you all are so stupid
Nothing was the same low key a classic though lol
Drake got one in hindsight
Yep he has one. Great album. Really sucks what happened after.
IYRTITL pushed it forward a bunch
take care and NWTS were huge and dense but hard to find someone who says they’re bloated
by the time we get to views, throwing s*** at the wall is seemed like a viable strategy for obtaining record breaking numbers. an album with 2/3 strong hits, playful and experimenting outside the artists norms deep cuts, and throwing in tracks that should have stayed as demo’s became almost a standard for a blockbuster hip hop release
the 7 track gimmick was a nice response to this but it was hard to catch on when the best record to come out of that was a pure dope boy rap record without any major hits
it’s harder for me to trace when it extended past hip hop, because the decline of this trend is feeling connected to the decline of hip hop in the mainstream
fans hate to admit it but the 20+ throw s*** on the wall thing felt cemented as a legitimate method for major artists with TLOP
Not even that deep.
Labels only want shareholder value
They thought that meant more songs.
Worked for a bit because of the streaming model
Then they realized this model will only devalue music and make people not love it
Which is why streaming isn’t even profitable for labels.

Lol
but even then my a***ysis is short sighted
how long have successful double albums served as a crowning achievement for major artists?
i guess the question becomes when and how did streaming shift the double album from a critical + commercial powerhouse product into a purely commercial triple a blockbuster

Streaming shifted music from art to background content. And that’s the bigger issue.

you had those in the 90s and 80s. and you also had the girl and party songs which were the majority of the biggest ones. ur cherrypicking the past when if u lived thru it u would know this has been the case for 30 years.
Nothing was the same low key a classic though lol
Drake got one in hindsight
nothing was the same, arguably the greatest mainstream rap album of the 2010s, is not a lowkey classic.
Take Care, Nothing Was The Same, If You're Reading this too late are all classics, and one of the greatest trilogies in rap history. the f*** is wrong with you niggas
fans hate to admit it but the 20+ throw s*** on the wall thing felt cemented as a legitimate method for major artists with TLOP
most things wrong with modern rap can be traced back to kanye
Nothing was the same low key a classic though lol
Drake got one in hindsight
He has like 5

My point is there was a balance and room for any type of song to become a hit. Now a days there is only one.
It was dead after CLB tbh. That album was BUNS but niggas celebrating streaming numbers like they got paid off it.
people excited as hell to have 12 song albums with 3-5 good songs as opposed to a 20 song album with 7+ good songs
dummies man
Yeah but musicianship is lowkey gonna be lost by the next generation cause these young mfs just want to be social media and twitch famous or make bs distorted underground music that just isn't good.
It's not heading in a good direction is all I'm saying
There will always be you “real” musicians and artist that take artistry seriously. The game desperately needs some more gatekeeping. Time to cut the fat.

more like 12 song albums with 11 good songs vs 25 song albums with 10 good ones

this same argument over and over since 2011 do yall not get tired
