the references to season 3 become more and more heavy handed as the game goes on
An action RPG??
first game had some pretty basic rpg elements so i guess it makes sense
hopefully they do a better job with it though because i think their loot/skills/weapon mods systems were the worst part of the game

Yeah it didn’t feel fleshed out out all in the first game
If the sequel is going to be huge like they’ve been teasing, hopefully they’ll take the time to make some deeper systems.

Oh great. The worst part of the last game is now becoming the soul of the 2nd.
Me and my girl was playing all of these games together in one go, she was completely enraptured, we both were. any time I opened up any sort of stat/gear/buffs menu in control, she immediately pulls out her phone or leaves to do something else lol, it's the only part of ALL OF THESE GAMES that took her out of it
Even Alan wake 2 didn't do it the best but at least it had a cool manner of presenting itself with the magazines/scenes that play after upgrading something. Running around picking up RNG legendary loot is not something I want Remedy to ever do again, it's not what they're good at
Watching Twin Peaks for the first time and the setting feels so intimately familiar coming off Alan Wake
Game is so nice to look at. A lot of unique elements that are just very enjoyable to look at. The atmosphere and vibe I got playing the game is unparalleled.
But man does the story suck. It had some funny moments, but it’s so convoluted. Felt like I couldn’t care less about what happened to anyone, and didn’t feel like I learned anything about anything through the narrative. Go ahead and leave a complex and rich world of lore for fans, but make what’s at the surface appealing too for people who don’t wanna jump through all the hoops…
Am I missing something?

assuming you played the first game i think theres an easy enough to follow story there but it does probably fall a little flat at parts especially with the real ending being hidden behind new game plus and there being so many obvious calls to remedys other games that people likely haven't played
but i do think half of the appeal of this game and what makes it so special is allowing yourself to jump through some of those hoops, they took a big risk by tearing apart the story and making it less accessible, it wont pay off for everyone like you said but it really hits hard for the people that get lost in it

Yeah I have no doubt there’s substance and fun in digging into the lore. The interpretation is half the fun.
What I’m saying is that the fundamental elements of the story: Like the spirit and relatability of the characters, the connections and tensions formed between them, and the morals taught in the game (only decent one that came to mind was the Anderson sequence towards the end about facing your fears) were all lacking. I walk out of a good story feeling I understand something about myself, life or people that I didn’t previously, and this had nothing of the sort inside of it. For a thriller, there was also no suspense in the story, I was never anticipating what would happen next, nor did I find any relief when things did unravel. It lacked satisfaction, in that it wasn’t hitting the beats that a good narrative hits to keep you hooked all the way through, and then give you the motivation at the end to dig into everything.
It’s like anyone in the game could’ve died at any point and I would not have cared, made worse because I know they’d just take a left turn at will and bring them back somehow if they wanted to since the story is so open, with multiple dimensions and all.
So it really is required to play control first? I started a few years ago but never finished

Not required but you’ll be missing the full experience, and they’re both great games so might as well do em back to back
If you got really far then you probably already know enough though

Control's AWE expansion contextualizes Alan Wake 2 a bit, but I wouldn't say its 100% necessary

Ok ok ok good looks

I hope I keep the energy to continue going through the lore and reading until the end, I just got the hotline. I’m like an hour in
