What kind of American are you?
Why do I feel like some of the people who hate this film most viscerally are exactly those it’s trying to reach? Does it really have nothing to say, or do y’all just desperately want it to reaffirm your current thoughts on the nation?
It’s certainly giving you a thesis on desensitization, it’s just more timely than it is novel. We’ve seen it before, but this is a fairly gripping version nonetheless, and I’m always going to feel a little softer to something which calls out our lack of empathy.
The experience did feel a little hollow. I wasn’t exactly moved. Such is the gamble with these minimalist works. Always a fan of Kirsten Dunst. And Cailee Spaeny is great as well.
Probably would be worth a rewatch somewhere down the line.
This was just as good on rewatch, feels like it gets straight to the punch and doesn’t feel as meandering as Men. Scenes can be very very effective, and the sound design is such a treat. Glad I could watch it one more time in Dolby before the screens got taken by the latest thing
Both Men and this film have had incredible sound design.
That scene with the people hanging felt like a continuation of what he accomplished with the tunnel scene in Men.
The gunshots might still be ringing in my ear.
Pretty good. The world needs more of the 4 (3?) lead actors immediately

!!!!!!
This really came and went dam
8th highest grossing movie of the year so far
I liked it. I’m not political myself so I didn’t mind the non stance although I wouldn’t say it wasn’t saying anything. Felt like it was kinda saying not to kill each other over differing political views cause in the end the government doesn’t care about any of us small folk
Kirsten Dunst was a standout to me cause I never seen her play a character like this before. She didn’t even sound like she usually does. Completely different speech pattern
Last 20 minutes were intense. Garland could make some crazy action movies if he were into that. Also the movie starting with the president practicing a speech to it ending with him throwing that all away to beg for his life was nice poetic symmetry
This s*** was great. The winter wonderland scene follow by the plemons scene was sick. He always kills it
No that was handled good. I liked that. All I’m saying is the only downfall, was Joel’s character in that final moment when Lee died. You telling me he couldn’t even close her eyes??? That’s a good gesture. He doesn’t have to get emotional and start crying but you could’ve acknowledged that your friend just got popped in front of you
yeah this was kinda my only real gripe with this movie -- I also do feel like a central theme in this movie was desensitization but yeah idk he cried a whole lot for Sammy but for Lee he just got up and kept going lol
Is this a reach? I noticed after the first run, Jesse was sitting against a wall that had crayon all over it. To me that showcases her innocence, child-like. Next we see her in the stadium surrounded by graffiti. To me that feels like teenager. Idk it seemed like a nice visual way of showcasing her growth/arc. Idk if Garland did that on purpose or not.
I noticed the colors too but the rest of what you're saying
mixed feelings on this, i thought it tailed off in the second half
my favourites:
• absolutely gorgeous movie, every frame of the war states was an absolute picture, it must have taken Garland years to storyboard this s***!!
• I loved how when they pass through the “neutral state” they slow down the cinematography, & its less picturesque, the shots are longer, very clever
• use of sound was excellent, they really doubled down on the detail of making it feel like a photo album
gripes:
• I didn’t feel invested enough in the characters for it to sustain long periods of silence in the final act… felt like it dragged at times (despite how good it looked)
• death of Lee totally took me out of the illusion… in what world do you tackle someone from getting shot & then stand straight up in the middle of the firing range? Ridiculous & forced unfortunately
7/10
well worth watching in 4K / OLED, s*** was jaw dropping at times
