i don’t get people who are getting angry about p4k reviews in 2025. alphonse is the only dude who tries on that staff and i’m not really a fan of his reviews like dat. he does that stereotypical p4k writer thing where they give you a long winded wikipedia summation of the artist’s career before they actually talk about the music. however he helps to put people onto new music from various regions and isn’t at least doing that trash poptimism crap p4k has been doing the last couple of years where they pretend sabrina carpenter is thë kate bush öf our times. i really like this album but this review isn’t really unfair. just enjoy the music on your own you don’t need someone to tell you if the album is good or not. or else your own self worth is non existent

I’m not saying a fantano review cripples someone career but he is a very influential big figure and he brags about it and makes a point of it, what your doing is just finding any cop out to make someone immune from critcism.

These people have their jobs and serve important roles in the artform for influence, the point of their job that someone like fantano who makes millions off is criticism. It’s completely okay if people critique the way they criticize music.

When I say harmful I mean not just to careers but it’s moreso towards attitudes towards music, music discourse, and narratives right. Just because fantano says that doesn’t mean it absolves him of any critique of what he does, he can still be a bad critic. The existence of the critic as a relevant figure necessitates a hierarchy to work as sort of gatekeepers that definetely influence music access narrative and opinion. People care about the art yea

i sort of see what you mean in regards to 'he can critique stuff and people can critique his criticism' equilibrium. nevertheless we're talking about such a fraction of a fraction of people that are even aware of fantano that i think its funny it all comes down to something so simple as its people who outright desire to get mad

People gotta stop caring about P4K man lol

I do just wanna throw it out there that Alphonse is legitimately terrible at reviews and most times he is biased.

The same thing he'll s*** on one artist for he'll d***ride another artist for. He's literally a KTT poster. Nothing more, nothing less.

But again, just goes back to my main point that it's best to stop caring about P4K.

Im surprised people still dont know that pitchfork scores are an average from multiple people's scores and not the actual reviewer

Which actually makes even less sense to me because it means there are some people there who rated Clipse album like, below 6? are they smoking PCP laced vlunts there?

I would’ve agreed like a loooong time ago but Fantano is the biggest music reviewer on earth, he’s the most well known critic there is, basically everyone in North America into music or the internet knows who he is. I don’t rly think it’s that simple tbh I think as a lot of other critics, and every big one in history, they are criticized. And for fantano while most can’t articulate there is a lot about how he judges albums that I have big problems with and I think have been bad for music discourse and criticism in its influence.

Nothing wrong with “the poptimism crap of testing Sabrina carpenter like Kate bush” if you can’t see the value and quality in pop music or music that isn’t so focused on meaning and experimentation then your like 20 years behind tbh pitchfork is better for the fact it has a variety of reviewers that can actually appreciate dif forms of music for what they are

That was just someone who changed their display name to troll, they literally admitted to it later in the thread. Like it was not even the fixed username, just the nickname and people still fell for it.

im pretty sure that's just a rumour and not actually true, i've heard that it's the reviewer and editor who come up with the score together

"When it comes to Pitchfork and scoring, I would say that you would be shocked by just how democratic the rating process is. Without giving much away (because I don’t think that’s fair to Pitchfork), it goes something like this: In general, a record is discussed by the writers and generally, through that, the site arrives at a score consensus (EDIT ON 1/21/15: Re-reading this and realized this sentence could be clearer. So, you know, not an announced and clear score consensus but you know, a general sense of where the record will fall on the P4K scale, whether it’s great, good, okay, meh, etc. The only people I ever discussed scores explicitly with were my editors, via email and it was usually them wanting to tweak the score slightly sometimes higher, sometimes lower.) Then reviews are assigned or fit to a writer (usually that writer has sent a pitch). So, in a sense yeah, the reviews are controlled by the editors because they assign someone whose opinion on the record (especially if it is a notable or relevant record) fits the view of the site. This really isn’t that different from how every publication assigns reviews. The one difference I would say is that Pitchfork is rarely going to give a review over to a critic with a cool point of view if that point of view doesn’t fit the editorial stance, especially if that stance is negative. Yeah yeah yeah, I work for SPIN, so this is probably a bad example, but SPIN let Rob Harvilla rip Watch The Throne to pieces (he gave it a 6). I don’t think Pitchfork would ever do that. At least not anymore."

this from a former writer old post tho
