Bro taste in music is ass
He’s a contrarian, nobody likes those guys and they don’t represent the culture
I don’t have a problem with people having their own opinions and perspectives etc but I come from the era where critics were in sync with the people and represented them and made sense of what we all felt with their expertise
Like when something like HHNF dropped back in 2007 there weren’t contrarian bozos tryna sell you on the idea that it wasn’t fire lmao
Knew his music taste was in the gutter when he said Kendrick needed to hop on ronrontheproducer and joogszn beats
Complete hack when it comes to reviewing music.

he's right though
“ and isn’t at least doing that trash poptimism crap p4k has been doing the last couple of years where they pretend sabrina carpenter is thë kate bush öf our times”
This is so real lmao
they make it sometimes too obvious that theyre under conde nast and these artists will be in gq or vogue. theyre just overcorrecting from when that publication hated pop music in the 00s and loved more experimental stuff.
Nothing wrong with “the poptimism crap of testing Sabrina carpenter like Kate bush” if you can’t see the value and quality in pop music or music that isn’t so focused on meaning and experimentation then your like 20 years behind tbh pitchfork is better for the fact it has a variety of reviewers that can actually appreciate dif forms of music for what they are
i dont have any issues with pop music i like teenage dream, madonna, sour or even the more experimental stuff that u get like fever ray etc. but my beef is that it comes to a point, where they make it so glaringly obvious theyve overcorrected on how bad their track record is on pop. i remember reading their review on espresso and it was overwrought for no reason. like it wasnt some spooky nu disco pop song thats unheard of which weve been getn for the last 5 years.
He’s a hilarious guy
hes put me onto more artists than when this site moved to here. at least he embraces new music and doesnt cry abt big 3 debates or how rap has fallen off cos monoculture is dead
Wait so the review could be really positive but the score could still be low?
Yep it happened with mk.gee review, where the score was like a 7, but the writer clearly loved it more than just that.
But im sure they probably get a reviewer who feels somewhat similar to the score given
Im surprised people still dont know that pitchfork scores are an average from multiple people's scores and not the actual reviewer
The issue can also just be with the metric someone is critiquing with and their criticisms aside from how they write it, feel like the issue people have with Pierre is a lot of his criticisms are rooted in fundamental biases that are so strongly like not about the musical experience and it generally feels very mean spirited, attention seeking, and negative. To me especially the negative and mean spirited parts. He’s not rly like enthusiastic to explore the nuances of the album or the things he loves in music it seems weirdly cynical and negative.
I can say I def enjoy his column where he posts the weird and cool s*** he finds, more than his reviews
I didn't even catch that bro was eating subway. That's a worse look than giving Sexxy Red a 7.5

Ohhh yeah that one is cool def

Ah I gotchu but my thing with that is I don’t think that’s purely a pop thing as I see them do the same thing for like, clipping or maxo where they do the critic thing of over exaggerating and finding all these meanings where they arrent there

i get that but now it’s come to a point where there’s no nice medium and it’s like they’re tryna make conde nast happy cos those same artists are gonna use gq for their rollouts.
