What changed in the last decade and what are some standouts/classics from the last decade and in general?
it's just been slowly progressing over time and the authors and artists have been getting better at their craft. as opposed to manga that has a rich and extensive history, manhwa is a fairly new medium in the modern iteration. after the ban on japanese media was lifted in korea, they've been influenced by japanese trends and ideas while deviating and manifesting them in their own way.
i can't really speak on "classics" without it being skewed to my opinions but some early popular series were things like:
if you want a taste of modern manhwa i'd recommend checking out "legend of the northern blade"

Amazing answer, thank you so much
Had no idea there was a ban on Japanese media in Korea, can you tell me more about that?
Also can you tell me about some of the ways that manhwas have deviated from Japanese influence and trends?
My bad for all the questions you don't have to answer any of this if you don't want to but thank you in advance

I remember hanging out at my friend's place to read manga and comic books. Bro has stacks of them lying around it's like a scene of every mangaka room. Would chill there until it gets late (never night otherwise my mom would whoop my ass) and whenever I want to bring some volumes home he would charge us. Extra if we return it late or if the book got damaged. At home me and my brother would sneak reading them in our bed after my mom wish us good night lol
Some titles I remember were Guyver, Flames of Recca, Karakuri Circus, Doraemon. I remember passing on HxH cause the art was trash lmao. S*** there was this josei about a woman teacher screwing hot dudes but she promised she'd never fall in love cause she's a free woman something. Man that was something. Anyway out of all the titles DBZ was the GOAT read ever. It's THE Shonen after all. From reading the manga books to watching the "cartoon" air on TV was a heck of a memory. I remember imagining the battle scenes, drawing the characters during class. The eye style, the hair, the muscles. Every kid drawing cartoon characters were mimicking Toriyama's art style
Man that guy really left such an impact. Not just to japan kids, other asian countries kids. In the west too. He left mankind an amazing gift. RIP to a legend.

1. yeah i dont wanna get too deep into it. japan and korea do not get along and have quite the complicated history. you can read a quick summary of the laws i was talking about here.
2. the most notable deviation has been the switch to long-strip web comic format as the industry standard. in the past they tried to mimic traditional manga paneling with "the breaker" being a quick example. they also take inspiration from jp manga trends, like the recent boom in isekai series, and add their own take on the setting with the reincarnation and regression tropes. there's many more example of this, like their unique take on the villainess otome genre. koreans have a tendency to portray strong women and sexualize them much less than the japanese counterpart. the more you consume, the more apparent the differences become.
the industry isn't quite yet at the point where they can produce stories like berserk, vagabond, and other amazing japanese classics, but i think given enough time, and especially at the rate that they're improving, it'll come sooner rather than later.

My bad if I came off as expecting some in depth history lesson. I'm aware that there is a lot of complicated and difficult history between Korea and Japan but between that knowledge only being surface level and not being from either place I would never lead any conversation touching on either with the air that I got that covered. Plus I love to learn and ask questions anyways
Thank you for the link on those laws though and for another incredible answer, I'm gonna stash this all in my notes. I really appreciate this
