they really the type to think weird anime is showing grotesque or lewd stuff but anything that doesn't follow a completey linear exposition heavy formula is the creator not knowing how to tell a story

In the podcast episode this clip comes from they went into more detail but essentially they find ghibli movies to be "boring" for the most part, which is something ill never understand, ghibli movies are full of personality and the stories are always so beautiful, i cant imagine people finding porco rosso boring, yet they do

Everywhere i look i see people having this opinion, and then i see them praise makoto shinkai

its such a regressive take to say they are Disney movies too

Like just because they're kid friendly doesn't make them Disney. Only the most absolute braindead person can watch a Ghibli movie vs a Disney movie and not see how ghibli movies are so much more bold and have a lot more on their plate thematically

Disney is never going to make a movie like The Wind Rises or Only Yesterday

and they sure as f*** will never make a Grave of the Fireflies. You may not even see most Hollywood R rated movies go as ballsy as that

tbh though I do love some Shinkai but yeah he is most definitely no Miyazaki or Takahata

Yeah, honestly i find the "its for kids" criticism to be dumb as hell. If something like that is labeled for kids to me its a huge compliment, sad to see people reject their more childish side, imagine not enjoying disney, pixar, ghibli, nintendo etc cause they're "for kids"

I only love a silent voice from him, i find his movies to be quite samey. I want him to give us a new story, tired of romance stories, its sad cause his movies have insane animation. People have also started to get tired of them imo, weathering with you wasnt received that well

Howl's moving castle is such a normie pick, it aint even in ghibli's top 5 imo.

a silent voice is actually from Naoko Yamada, not Shinkai lol

but yeah I love that film too. Liz and the Blue Bird is another excellent film from her

I love that he does romance stories tbh and I think he found a new way to tell his stories when he did stuff like 5 cm per second (still my fav from him) and garden of words and then Your Name was a pretty big switch up from those. I do agree though he tried to repeat YN with weathering with you and it just didn't work at all.

I don't mind Shinkai telling romance stories, I just hope he keeps finding new ways to tell those stories. The sad thing is that the absolute insane success of a movie like Your Name is enough to ruin a creator because expectations just f*** em over.

it dropped the same year as your name and there was a lot of comparisons drawn between the two films which might be why your brain made that connection, but yeah it woulda been crazy if shinkai was the one to drop both in the same year

gotta put respect on yamada's name though, between silent voice, k-on, tamako love story, and liz she a legend in her own right

she is the best creator in anime atm imo

Yeah i dont know how i messed up lol. 5cm per second is my favorite of his and id give it a strong 7. Maybe i dislike him more than the average anime fan cause they've always compared him to miyazaki for no reason (at least here in italy they did) and thus ive been holding him to a super high standard, but id love to be proven wrong

A silent voice was one of the first anime movies ive watched so yeah my brain probably made that connection, my dumbass was sure of that too
Havent checked anything else of her though, might watch the movies you've written

Its like the fact that they have a platform and are relatively big channels makes them think they are onto smth with some of these trash takes or like their opinion weights more
We hate to see it

the thing with yamada films is that other than silent voice, they are all tie-ins to existing franchises. liz and the blue bird is probably the easiest to watch on its own but you'll probably get more out of it watching hibike euphonium first. and then for k-on movie and tamako love story you'd have to watch k-on and tamako market first respectively

but all of it is worth watching imo, shows and movies alike, all hits no misses
